Todd Boehly expected to sell Chelsea stake as Clearlake closes in

Todd Boehly is expected to sell his Chelsea stake as Clearlake Capital closes in on a significant change to the club’s ownership structure.

Chelsea’s majority shareholder is nearing an agreement to buy out co-owners Boehly and Mark Walter, with the proposed transaction valuing the club at around £5billion, according to fresh reporting from The Guardian.

It represents a major progression from the talks first revealed last month.

ReadChelsea reported on 17 August that Boehly and Walter had opened discussions over selling their stakes to Clearlake, although no agreement was guaranteed at that stage.

Those talks now appear much closer to producing a deal.

Clearlake could take greater control of Chelsea

Clearlake already owns 61.5 per cent of Chelsea.

Boehly, Walter and Hansjörg Wyss each hold 12.8 per cent, having formed part of the consortium which bought the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Chelsea confirmed at the time that Boehly and Clearlake would share joint control and equal governance despite Clearlake providing the majority stake.

That unusual structure could now be moving towards a decisive change.

The Guardian reports that Walter is close to an agreement, while Boehly is also expected to sell his stake. Wyss’s position remains unclear.

Clearlake already has day-to-day operational control through Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano.

Increasing its ownership could therefore simplify decision-making at Stamford Bridge rather than bringing an entirely new group into the club.

One of the areas potentially affected is Chelsea’s long-running stadium question.

The report says Boehly and Eghbali have differed over whether Chelsea should redevelop Stamford Bridge or pursue an alternative site.

There has been no official Chelsea announcement confirming a sale, while representatives for Boehly and Clearlake declined to comment.

For now, the key development is clear: discussions that were still uncertain in August have moved considerably closer to changing Chelsea’s ownership structure.
