In midweek Chelsea took on Leeds United in the Carabao Cup. The match turned out to be quite the thriller, ending 6-3 with all but one of those strikes coming in the second half. Notable in his absence from the squad entirely was one Romeo Lavia. The midfielder has had a fairly difficult time since his move to the Blues, still awaiting his first competitive 90 minutes for them three years after making the switch. His manager provided an update on his fitness ahead of the return to league action on Saturday.

What Xabi Alonso Had to Say

The Blues boss was quizzed about a number of his players, particularly the four injured names who have been impacted for the entire campaign to date. While there was bad news on the rest, there was a positive update as Alonso noted that Lavia will be fit to feature against Hull City at the weekend. That is a slight boost as the midfield is already lacking in options during the absence of Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson.

The former Southampton man being fit does indicate that his missing the squad in midweek was a precaution to rest him and keep him fit as he continues to build match fitness after missing so much time over the past few years.

The Last Word

Lavia’s fitness does make for some more interesting options for the manager, the expectation is his opponents will play defensively and so a more technical, press-resistant player like him could partner a distributor like Valentin Barco to some effect. There is also the possibility of Reece James getting the nod and providing a defensive partner for the outing but it will all depend on how the coach aims to set his base up to recycle the ball and eventually break the opposition’s line.
