Everton and Charlton Athletic will both look for their first points of the 2026/27 Women’s Super League season when they meet at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Everton began with a 1–0 defeat away to Crystal Palace, while newly promoted Charlton endured a difficult return to the top flight as Liverpool won 4–0 at The Valley.
For Everton, the first home game of the season is an opportunity to produce more from a squad that changed significantly during the summer. Charlton, meanwhile, need to show that their heavy opening defeat does not define their return to the WSL.

Everton team news and predicted lineup
Everton’s opening-day defeat at Crystal Palace was a frustrating start to Scott Phelan’s first full season in charge. Lexi Lloyd-Smith scored the only goal after 34 minutes, and Everton were unable to find an equaliser despite Phelan making several attacking changes during the second half.
Courtney Brosnan captained the side in goal, with Honoka Yonei Kitagawa, Rion Ishikawa, Maz Pacheco and Hannah Blundell all starting in defence.
Ruby Mace, Clare Wheeler, Yuka Momiki and Zara Kramžar featured through the middle, while Ornella Vignola and Holly McNamara started further forward.
Everton also have options to change the team. Honoka Hayashi, Hannah Cain and summer arrival Ruby van Gool all came from the bench against Palace, while Megan Finnigan was available among the substitutes following her return from injury.
Phelan could nevertheless favour continuity for the first home match of the season, particularly with Everton looking for greater attacking efficiency rather than requiring a complete tactical reset.
Predicted Everton XI:
Brosnan; Blundell, Ishikawa, Kitagawa, Pacheco; Mace, Wheeler; Momiki, Kramžar, Vignola; McNamara.
Charlton Athletic team news and predicted lineup
Charlton were given a difficult introduction to WSL football against Liverpool. Grace Fisk scored after only eight minutes and added another early in the second half before Vivien Endemann and Cornelia Kapocs completed a 4–0 Liverpool victory.
Karen Hills started Sophie Whitehouse in goal behind a defence containing Ashleigh Neville, Ellie N’Dow, captain Kelly Skeels and Ellie Mason.
Experienced Australia international Emily van Egmond started in midfield alongside Keira Flannery, while Lucy Fitzgerald, Jodie Hutton and Lois Davidson were among Charlton’s attacking options.
Hills used all five substitutes as Charlton tried to change the game, with Carla Humphrey, Lucia Lobato, Lia Azzaro, Gracie Johnston and Katie Lockwood all getting minutes.
The scoreline may tempt Hills to make changes at Goodison, although retaining the core of the side would also give Charlton an opportunity to respond after a difficult first afternoon back in the division.
Team update:
Charlton Athletic confirmed that forward Linda Lif Boama sustained a knee injury in training and has successfully undergone surgery. The 25-year-old will be out for a period of time as she undergoes her rehabilitation.
Predicted Charlton XI:
Whitehouse; Neville, N’Dow, Skeels, Mason; Partido, van Egmond, Flannery; Fitzgerald, Hutton, Davidson.
Two teams looking for a better attacking return
Neither side scored on the opening weekend, but the nature of their defeats was different.
Everton lost by a single goal at Crystal Palace and remained in the contest throughout. The bigger concern was their inability to turn possession and attacking changes into an equaliser.
There is also an unresolved issue surrounding that result. Crystal Palace made substitutions during four separate second-half windows, exceeding the permitted number, and the case has reportedly been referred to an independent tribunal. That process should not distract Everton from Sunday’s task, but it means their opening result has an unusual element hanging over it.
Charlton have more immediate defensive issues to address.
Liverpool found space early and repeatedly punished the newly promoted side after the interval. Charlton now face another established WSL team away from home, but Everton are unlikely to provide the same attacking threat Liverpool showed at The Valley.
That gives Hills’ side a chance to demonstrate greater defensive organisation while trying to establish more of an attacking presence themselves. Everton should expect to have more of the initiative at Goodison than they did away to Palace. How effectively they use it could determine the game.
Everton vs Charlton prediction
Everton’s opening defeat was disappointing, but there was less between them and Crystal Palace than Charlton’s four-goal loss to Liverpool suggested in their opener.
Goodison Park and Everton’s greater WSL experience should give Phelan’s side an advantage, although they need to show considerably more in the final third.
Charlton should be more compact after last weekend, but Everton are capable of taking their first win of the season.
Prediction: Everton 3–1 Charlton Athletic
