MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - “Founded in Wisconsin” is a series of short books on companies with a big economic impact on the different areas around the state.
When Phil Greenwood focused on Green Bay, he had so much material on the Packers, he decided the franchise needed its own business case analysis.
Greenwood’s book, “The Ultimate Anomaly” explores the Green Bay Packers longevity.
Greenwood credited the Packers’ resilience through tough financial times in the 1920s, 1930s and 1950s.
“The Packers became a non-profit Wisconsin corporation, and they could sell stocks to the Packers fans,” Greenwood said. " The fans realized that they are never going to earn anything on their stock, they won’t get dividends or anything like that. It’s from their heart."
Another financial impact the Packers might deal with in the future is private equity being allowed by the NFL.
“Because the Packers are non-profit, their current bylaws don’t allow them to bring on outside investors,” Greenwood said. “The NFL is allowing private equity people to invest in other teams, so the Packers are probably going to have to adapt or change somehow because they may be missing out on billions of dollars of financing if they do need it.”
Greenwood’s book about the Packers launched this week and can be found on Amazon.
Greenwood’s next area of focus will be on the La Crosse region.
