On September 10, Kate Middleton made a surprise appearance at Everton Football Club in Liverpool alongside her husband Prince William.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were there to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, and the future queen’s earrings paid homage to a young woman who lost her life to suicide.

Since 2023, Kate has worn her Issy Star earrings numerous times during royal engagements having to do with mental health.

When it comes to her jewelry choices, Kate Middleton is always thoughtful—and such was the case during a surprise outing to Everton Football Club alongside her husband, Prince William.

On September 10, the Prince and Princess of Wales marked World Suicide Prevention Day in Liverpool, where they launched William’s new toolkit, On Your Side: A Suicide Prevention Toolkit for People in Sport. The future queen rewore a cornflower blue Edeline Lee pantsuit she previously sported during a visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy this past May, paired with Hugo Boss pumps and the same Laura Lombardi gold chain necklace she wore on September 8 to drop Prince George off at Eton.

But it was Kate’s earrings that had the deepest symbolism on Thursday. The princess rewore her Issy Star earrings, given to her in 2023 by Maidenhead Rugby Club coach Sarah Renton, according to fashion site What Kate Wore. The earrings were made in memory of Renton’s daughter, Issy Phipps, who took her own life on April 29, 2023—coincidentally, William and Kate’s wedding anniversary.

The earrings were designed by Issy’s cousin Sophie McGown, and are available at McGown’s online shop, Earsass. The company donates £5 ($6.75) from every pair sold to Brave Mind U.K., an organization that supports young people’s mental health.

Since Kate received the earrings three years ago, they’ve been her go-to option when taking part in mental health engagements, particularly those having to do with suicide prevention. Per Marie Claire, since Kate first wore the earrings in 2023, Issy Star has raised over $40,000 for mental health and suicide prevention charities.

McGown told Hello! that the Princess of Wales’s support “touched and resonated with so many people,” adding, “I think what Kate did by wearing our earrings meant so much to us, because it opened up a talking point about mental health and suicide.”

“The amount of people that contact us that are buying the earrings for people who are struggling or gifting them to someone who has just lost someone is numerous,” she continued.

“I think Kate talking about all of the things she’s been through and making space for these people who go through hell on a daily basis is phenomenal,” McGown said.

At Thursday’s event, William said (per People), “Suicide remains one of the greatest challenges facing our society. Many people will have felt the impact of this personally. You will know families whose lives have been changed forever by loss. Today, we remember them. And we recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to prevent more families from experiencing that pain.”

Earlier this week, Kate wore another meaningful pair of earrings—her beloved Cartier Trinity earrings, believed to be a subtle tribute to Princess Diana, who was a fan of the Cartier Trinity collection. It’s a way to make sure Diana is there for important occasions, and according to Tatler, Kate’s earrings are understood to be a gift from William, “who will surely have understood the collection’s powerful connection to his mother.”
