Everton head to north London today looking for another memorable result against Tottenham — and there have been a few over the years.
Trips to Spurs haven’t always been particularly kind to the Blues. In fact, Everton went more than two decades without a league victory at White Hart Lane before David Moyes’ side finally ended the wait in 2006.
But from a huge night in the 1985 title race to Dominic Calvert-Lewin announcing Carlo Ancelotti’s new-look Everton in 2020, there are some crackers in the archive.
Here are five of our favourites.
Tottenham 1-2 Everton — April 1985
We’ll start with the big one. Everton arrived at White Hart Lane on 3 April 1985 with the First Division title race reaching boiling point. Spurs were serious challengers themselves and the game had the feel of a night that could shape where the championship ended up.
Andy Gray and Trevor Steven put Howard Kendall’s side 2-0 ahead before Graham Roberts pulled one back for Tottenham. Neville Southall then produced a magnificent late save from Mark Falco as Everton held on for a hugely important 2-1 victory.
The Blues finished the job over the following weeks, eventually winning the title by 13 points. Some away wins are bigger than others.
Tottenham 0-2 Everton — August 2006
Twenty-one years. That was how long Everton had waited for another league victory at White Hart Lane before Moyes’ side finally broke the spell on 26 August 2006.
And they did it the hard way. Kevin Kilbane was sent off for a second bookable offence after 33 minutes, leaving Everton to play almost an hour with 10 men.
Calum Davenport turned the ball into his own net eight minutes after half-time before Andy Johnson made it 2-0 on 66 minutes. After 21 years, doing it with 10 men wasn’t a bad way to end the wait.
Tottenham 1-3 Everton — August 2007
Having waited 21 years for one, Everton decided 12 months was quite long enough for the next. Moyes took his side back to White Hart Lane on 14 August 2007, and they were 3-1 up by half-time on a wet Tuesday night in north London.
Joleon Lescott headed Everton in front almost immediately before Anthony Gardner equalised for Spurs. Leon Osman restored the lead, and Alan Stubbs made it three just before the interval. Spurs had Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent in their starting XI. Everton simply took the game away from them before half-time.
Tottenham 0-1 Everton — November 2008
And then they did it again. Everton’s third successive league victory at White Hart Lane arrived on 30 November 2008, and it came in Moyes’ 300th match as manager.
Steven Pienaar drove into the penalty area early in the second half and saw his shot deflect off Vedran Ćorluka and beyond Heurelho Gomes. The goal was subsequently awarded as a Ćorluka own goal.
Everton protected the lead to complete a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes at the ground. From 21 years without a league win at Tottenham to three victories there in successive seasons. Funny old game and all that.
Tottenham 0-1 Everton — September 2020
James Rodríguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucouré had arrived. There was genuine excitement around Ancelotti’s Everton and, for one afternoon at least, everything looked rather good.
All three summer signings made their Premier League debuts as the Blues opened the 2020/21 season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The winner was a beauty. Lucas Digne delivered a free-kick from the left, and Calvert-Lewin climbed above the Tottenham defence to power a header beyond Hugo Lloris.
Everton thoroughly deserved the 1-0 victory. It was their first away league win against one of the established top-six clubs in 40 attempts. We all know that particular Everton story didn’t ultimately go where we hoped. But that afternoon was fun.
