The 2026 NFL season is on its final approach to starting in Houston. It’s now just a few days out from the Houston Texans kicking off their season on Sept. 13 at noon inside now-named Reliant Stadium against the Buffalo Bills in what looks to be a great matchup to start the year.
This is one of the best games of Week 1, given the enticing showdown of the Texans’ vaunted defense against one of the best quarterbacks in the game in Josh Allen. Not only that, but it will be the primary game in the early afternoon window across the country.
Houston Texans’ Week 1 Matchup vs Buffalo Bills Offers Great Opportunity to Prove Themselves
The Texans vs Bills showdown has taken place for the past two years, and this will be the third straight season it will be in Houston. The Texans have won the last two games in thrilling fashion.
Houston won last season in late November, 23-19 after a game-winning interception. C.J. Stroud was out due to injury, but the Texans still got the job done with Davis Mills on a Thursday night.
This time around, it’s the season opener and presents another intriguing contest. It’s actually the first time in the coach DeMeco Ryans era that the Texans will be starting the season at home. Houston will have the home crowd on its side, and that will make for a formidable environment for Allen and the Bills.

High Expectations for the Texans

The 25th season in Texans history has been greatly hyped up due to the talent and potential of the team. The Texans are expected to have one of, if not the best defense in the NFL this year. While Stroud struggled immensely in the playoffs, he has been generally reliable throughout his career.
Given the new look offensive line with rookie Keylan Rutledge, and a supporting cast that features wide receiver Kayshon Boutte alongside Nico Collins and a deeper tight end room led by Dalton Schultz, the Texans offense has enough to be a productive unit.
The main piece will be the run game with new lead running back David Montgomery and second-year back Woody Marks behind him. The pass protection and running game will be important to watch for against the Bills. Given the likes of Ed Oliver and Bradley Chubb up front, the Texans will need to handle the pressure and find a way to establish the run.
Houston Texans’ Week 1: Golden Chance to Prove It
The Texans are considered a potential Super Bowl contender, and this is the perfect chance to win in Week 1 over another contender in the AFC. The Bills are always one of the top teams in the conference, and the Texans can start their season off with a bang over Buffalo. It would prove that they are here to play.
The Texans defense has had Allen’s number over the past two seasons, and the Bills offense has struggled mightily. Not only that, the Texans have been great against the Bills in Houston. When the Texans beat the Bills last season, it propelled them into playoff contender talks.
The Texans have won six games in a row against the Bills in Houston, which also includes the Wild Card win in 2020. The Bills have scored 19 and 20 points in their last two matchups.
Allen threw two interceptions with no touchdowns and got sacked eight times last year. In 2024, Allen went nine for 30 with 131 total passing yards.
The Last Word
Given the defensive firepower and fresh look on offense, the Texans have to be considered the favorites in this one. The Bills do have DJ Moore on the outside and new head coach Joe Brady. Regardless, history is not on their side. Brady was the offensive coordinator last season, and Ryan’s defense was handling the passing game well. Add Reed Blankenship to the secondary, and it won’t be easy.
The Texans will need to find a way to slow down running back James Cook, who ran for 116 yards and a touchdown last season against them.
A win would set them up well against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 and give them all the momentum they need to begin this year of very high hopes.
