Tiffany & Co. has been making trophies for America’s biggest sporting moments for more than 160 years. The New York-based jewelry house is behind some of the most recognizable awards in professional sports, including the Super Bowl’s Vince Lombardi Trophy, the NBA and WNBA Championship trophies, Major League Baseball’s World Series trophy, and the NWSL’s end-of-season awards, among others. Among its longest-running partnerships is with the U.S. Open, for which Tiffany has handcrafted the tennis championship trophies for nearly 40 years.
Tiffany has described its approach to trophy making as a reflection of the same commitment athletes bring to their sport. “Passion is what turns seconds into final sets, minutes into quarters and hours into overtime,” notes an excerpt from the 2023 Assouline book, Tiffany & Co.: Crafting Victory. “It’s what drives us forward, pushes us through and narrowly separates victory from defeat. Each year, the skilled craftspeople at the Tiffany hollowware workshop use time-honoured techniques to handcraft the most revered symbols of athletic achievement. Why? Because if an athlete can spend their whole life training for one perfect moment, we should do the same.”
During the U.S. Open each year, Tiffany operates a pop-up experience in the Fan Zone inside the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. Visitors can see the traditional engraving tools used by the workshop’s craftspeople, take photos with a professional photographer in a dedicated area, and explore the history of the house’s nearly four decades of trophy making for the tournament. The space is designed to give fans a closer look at the craftsmanship behind the awards they watch being lifted on court.
As U.S. Open finals weekend gets underway, a history of the trophies:

The men’s and women’s singles championship trophies are the most recognizable awards at the U.S. Open. Each one stands 18 inches tall, weighs nine pounds, and is made of sterling silver. They are handcrafted at Tiffany’s hollowware workshop in Cumberland, Rhode Island, by a team of master craftspeople using techniques that have been practiced for generations, including spinning, silversmithing, chasing, hand engraving, and polishing. The entire process takes approximately six months and involves around 66 hours of labor per trophy.
Since 2023, Tiffany has arranged for on-site engraving at the tournament itself, meaning singles champions can leave Arthur Ashe Stadium the same day with their name already inscribed on their trophy.
The doubles trophies

The doubles championship trophy takes a different form. Rather than a tall cup, it is a sterling silver revere-style bowl, 13 inches in diameter and weighing four pounds. It is also made at Tiffany’s Rhode Island workshop, though the process is considerably shorter, taking around 13 hours to complete. But the same age-old silversmithing techniques used for the singles trophies are applied to the doubles bowl, keeping the craftsmanship consistent across all of the tournament’s awards.
