Chelsea have agreed a new contract with Pedro Neto, who will remain at Stamford Bridge until June 2032. The deal is on improved terms and comes with the option of a further season, ending a long spell of transfer speculation surrounding the Portugal international.
Neto moved to the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2024 in a deal understood to be worth £51.4m and has featured 108 times since. Since then, he has gotten 40 goal contributions, including three strikes in Chelsea’s successful 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign. The 26-year-old has been mainly deployed as a wing-back in Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system this season, a far cry from his regular position.
Ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Hull City, Alonso gave a ringing endorsement of that tactical repositioning. The Chelsea manager said:
“For me, he is a winger. You can call him a winger or wing-back because he has many qualities. He can play on the last line and defend on the first line. He has this capacity to do many things. He is good in one-on-ones, he is scoring goals and has a fantastic work rate. He connects very well with players around him.”
The comments help explain why Alonso has given one of his most inventive operators such an unfamiliar job. Neto has already paid back that faith with goals against Brighton and Leeds United this season.
Neto has his own opinion on staying at Chelsea
The winger had been linked with a move away from the club throughout the summer window, with Manchester City amongst the sides said to be interested in his services. Instead he chose to stay and adapt to the demands of a new coaching regime.
Neto said of the renewal, once confirmed:
“I feel at home here. I feel like I want to achieve more things here. I’m really excited because I think we can achieve a lot of things together.”
The extension is part of a wider institutional exercise at Stamford Bridge to review and reward senior contracts systematically. Joao Pedro agreed improved terms last month, whilst Reece James and Moises Caicedo both signed fresh deals earlier in the year. Neto started Saturday afternoon’s game against Hull City in the wing-back role that has become synonymous with his season.
