Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool do have an option-to-buy clause in their loan agreement with Barcelona for Ronald Araujo.
The Italian journalist previously reported on Friday that Liverpool’s agreement with Barcelona does not include a right-to-buy clause for Araujo worth €55m (¢47m), but he has now corrected himself.
Initially, he said that the agreement with Barcelona for Araujo was simply a run-of-the-mill loan agreement, but he has now clarified the situation.
On Saturday, he said: “I wanted to clarify something I was mentioning on a podcast that Araujo didn’t have a buy option clause. That’s NOT the case, as I told you in the summer. It was just my mistake. There IS a buy option clause and It’s worth €55m.”
It says a lot about how much Araujo has impressed fans and journalists that when Romano reported that the £47m clause didn’t exist, there was a sense of disappointment. The Uruguayan has impressed massively since moving to Anfield, and there is a future at the club for him if he wants it.

Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool are effectively leaving the door open to Araujo, in the event that the 27-year-old decides he wants to stay at Liverpool instead of returning to Barcelona next summer. His £300,000-a-week wages would become a topic of negotiations if he made that decision, however.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool “have plans to hold talks with Araujo in the New Year to discuss his situation and understand how he feels about potentially remaining at Anfield.”
The report states: ‘The priority at Liverpool is therefore to ensure Araujo remains settled and focused on his performances, with the club’s door effectively open should he decide that Merseyside is where he wants to continue his career.
“However, speaking to sources close to Araujo’s camp, we understand the defender does not currently regard his Barcelona career as finished.
“Araujo remains open to the possibility of returning to the Nou Camp, but the stance of Flick will be crucial to that decision.
“If the Barcelona boss makes it clear that Araujo will once again have an important role within his plans, the player would consider returning.
“If there is no such indication, however, we understand Araujo is expected to leave Barcelona in 2027 and look for a permanent move elsewhere, with Liverpool naturally positioned as one of the clubs who could benefit from that situation.”
