Everton extended their unbeaten run this season to five matches in all competitions as they weathered an early storm at Tottenham Hotspur to earn a goalless draw and leave their hosts without a Premier League goal so far in the fledgling campaign.
Spurs started at a relentless pace but were unable to test Jordan Pickford and the hosts’ best opportunity of the game came late on when the England number one gifted them possession only to redeem himself with a save low down to his left from Lucas Bergvall’s shot.
At the other end, opposite number Antonin Kinsky produced an even bigger clanger when he kicked the ball to [Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall](http://Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall)’s feet, but the midfielder shot too close to him, before Brennan Johnson wasted an equally good opportunity for the Blues.
And here's how we rated the Everton players...
Jordan Pickford 7
Reedemed himself with a smart save down to his left to keep out Lucas Bergvall’s shot after he’d gifted the ball to Spurs with a misplaced pass from his weaker right foot moments earlier, he needed to be alert at all times without his goal necessarily being peppered and was also called into action in the first half to make a save with his leg to deny former Liverpool player Andy Robertson’s shot from an angle.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles 7
Kept busy on his first start, the former Arsenal man’s eyes will have lit up when the ball fell to him outside the opponents’ penalty area again for a shot, but this time it fell to his weaker left foot and he fired wide. He looked comfortable on the ball but felt the pace after making a return to the Premier League after three years in France.
Vitalii Mykolenko 8
An accomplished display from the Ukraine international, he put an early tackle in on Savio and has defended strongly in the face of regular waves of attacks while also having a headed effort which caused something of a panic for Kinsky.
James Tarkowski 7
Strong leadership was required as Spurs piled on the pressure early on, but his tough resilience enabled Everton to weather the storm as be dealt with everything that came his way.
Jarrad Branthwaite 8
Made a crucial block to keep out a Sandro Tonali shot, he had to read the game well and offered the Blues an opportunity to step out of defence when they did have the ball.
James Garner 7
Tested Kinsky with a free-kick effort in first half stoppage time, this was one of the sternest tests of his match sharpness to date since returning from a hernia operation given Spurs coming out of the traps quickly, he had to get some last-ditch challenges in but ended up getting booked for bringing down Savio near the halfway line.
Harrison Armstrong 6
Penalised early on for a challenge on Omar Marmoush that looked like the kind of call more experienced players might get away with, Archie Gray then caught him with a full-blooded tackle but he’s learning fast at this level showing maturity beyond his years.
Brennan Johnson 5
Blazed over with his last touch of the game with an inviting chance that he should have got on target from Dewsbury-Hall’s low delivery, it summed up a frustrating return to the club for whom his goal won the 2025 Europa League final and moments later he was given a warm round of applause from the home fans as he went off.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 6
Handed a gift of a chance on a plate when Kinsky kicked the ball straight to him but even though he got a shot in on his stronger left foot, it was too close to the Spurs keeper and he took his frustrations out on Tonali soon afterwards with a challenge that produced the first booking of the game before playing a clever pass that Johnson should have done better with.
Tyrique George 7
Blew hot and cold in the first half but came into life in the first 20 minutes after the break with a string of surging runs and crosses, picking out Barry for his headed chance, before making way.
Thierno Barry 6
Starved of service in the first half, he put himself about more after the break, having a headed chance at the back post from George’s lofted cross which Kinsky deflected wide.
SUBS
Jack Grealish (on 65 for George) 7
Came on midway through the second half to try and give Everton some extra nous, he’s still feeling his way back in after long lay-off but showed some nice touches.
Hayden Hackney (on 75 for Johnson) 7
Got a run-out in the latter stages as David Moyes looked to shore things up by deploying the regular central midfielder on the right wing where he put in a solid shift.
Jake O’Brien (on 75 for Maitland-Niles) 7
With Merlin Rohl injured, the Republic of Ireland came on for his first appearance of the season, operating in the right-back berth.
