Shedeur Sanders gets bad news ahead of Browns' season debut image
The Cleveland Browns are coming up on the start of their season, and they have a slew of quarterbacks in the fold, including backup Shedeur Sanders. Of course, Deshaun Watson is getting the start for the Browns, but things are always fluid in the NFL.
Even though Watson is starting, it's not wild to think that Sanders could get the start at some point. All it takes is a few rough games for the powers that be to start wanting to make changes, because the NFL has a short attention span. Unfortunately for Sanders, he may be waiting a long time to take the field as the team's starting quarterback. It doesn't have to do with his talent. It's more just the plan that management is following.
Browns aren't planning to rush Shedeur Sanders into action
Just one day before the Browns' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN reporter and NFL insider Jeremy Fowler discussed the Cleveland quarterback situation. Appearing on "SportsCenter," Fowler said that the Browns simply aren't going into the new season feeling as if they need to start Sanders at all this year. Fowler also said they were in it for the long haul with Watson and will give him time to adjust.
"Here's how the Browns are looking at this with how far and how many games based on what I know, they're going to base it on performance, like they would any player," he said in the interview. "So, they're going to treat it as such."
He also said that he fully expects "grace" in this situation. "One, they got six players on offense that are either rookies or second-year players. So, they're incredibly young on offense," Fowler said. "And they know Deshaun Watson hasn't played football in about two years, so they are expecting some level of rust."
Fowler added that in general, management is "optimistic" and they "want this to go well." Watson was booed by the Browns fans during the offseason, so he may even have a rougher crowd at home than on the road. Regardless, it's not good news for Sanders that they're serious about Watson and not thinking of a quick replacement.
