The Miami Heat could be in the mix to sign Devin Carter.
Longtime Heat reporter Ira Winderman believes signing Carter would make sense for Miami as a Heat-type move, especially given his family connection to the organization.
The free agent is the son of former Heat guard and assistant Anthony Carter, who served for the franchise from 2018 to 2023 as a player development coach.
“Yes, it would, considering how the Heat have long brought in sons of those who have been with the organization or those whose parents have had ties with the organization," Winderman wrote.
"The Heat have both the salary-cap and roster-space wherewithal to make a move for the son of former Heat guard and assistant coach Anthony Carter.”
Devin Carter enters free agency after Hawks release
Devin Carter hit unrestricted free agency after the Atlanta Hawks waived him on Friday.
Carter was sent by the Sacramento Kings to Atlanta back in June for a future second-round pick.
The 13th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, Carter averaged a career-best 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists last season in Sacramento. However, injuries have limited him since his rookie campaign, logging a total of 74 appearances throughout his young career.
Despite unavailability issues, Carter is a talented guard. During his junior season at Providence, he averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists en route to being named the 2024 Big East Player of the Year.
Miami Heat might join Boston Celtics for Devin Carter
The Miami Heat could be in a position to join the Boston Celtics in pursuit of Devin Carter. Per reports, the Celtics have shown interest in the 24-year-old after being released by the Hawks.
The Heat have a glaring hole to fill on their point guard slate. Behind starter Davion Mitchell, Miami only has Dru Smith and rookie two-way player Tre Donaldson.
Given the Heat's urgent need for another backup guard, Carter would be an interesting name to monitor for them ahead of the new NBA season.
