Vikings Make Surprising Contract Move for Key Starter Ahead of Packers Game 1
The Minnesota Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is entering the final year of his contract, which carries an $8.9 million salary-cap hit. Meanwhile, the Vikings have agreed to restructure the cornerback’s contract ahead of the 2026 season.

Rodgers is expected to continue his role as one of the Vikings’ starting cornerbacks heading into the 2026 season. He was listed as a starter on Minnesota’s depth chart ahead of Sunday’s game, lining up alongside veteran safety Harrison Smith in the team’s defensive backfield.

Ahead of their regular-season opener, Minnesota made an adjustment to Rodgers’ contract to create additional financial flexibility. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the franchise converted up to $1.5 million of Rodgers’ playing-time incentives into a guaranteed signing bonus.
Under the terms of his original contract, Rodgers would have needed to play at least 85% of Minnesota’s defensive snaps during the 2026 season to earn those incentives.
“The Vikings are revising the contract of CB Isaiah Rodgers, converting playtime incentives (up to $1.5M) to signing bonus as a nod to his status as a proven starter,” Flowers wrote. “It will also create additional cap room, per sources. Rodgers, 28, started 15 games in 2025, due $5M this year.”
By guaranteeing the incentives through a signing bonus, Minnesota can spread the bonus across future void years, allowing the team to lower Rodgers’ immediate cap charge and gain some much-needed financial flexibility. Before the move, Minnesota had approximately $6.39 million in available cap space, placing them among the teams with the least room in the NFL.
Entering the final season of the two-year contract he signed with Minnesota in 2025, Rodgers is set to earn $5.94 million in 2026. He can also earn additional incentives tied to postseason recognition, including $250,000 for making the Pro Bowl, $350,000 for being named Second-Team All-Pro, and $500,000 for earning First-Team All-Pro honors.
Rodgers established himself as a full-time starter under defensive coordinator Brian Flores in 2025, appearing in all 17 regular-season games while making 15 starts.
Last season, Rodgers recorded 66 tackles, four pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one interception. His most memorable performance came in Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, when he made Vikings history by returning an interception 87 yards for a touchdown and recovering a fumble that he returned 66 yards for another touchdown in the same game.
