Patrick Mahomes' Ownership Group Lands $185 Million Update Ahead of NFL Season 1
Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, Kansas City’s soccer territory made major headlines. The ownership group that includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany just cleared a major financial hurdle for a long-planned stadium project.
City officials signed off on the financing package needed to expand the Kansas City Current’s stadium before Patrick and the Chiefs kick off their 2026 season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
KC council approves $185m stadium expansion tied to Patrick Mahomes
On Thursday, the Kansas City Council approved a plan worth up to $185 million to expand CPKC Stadium and develop the Berkley Riverfront. The project is part of a larger $1.4 billion district plan. Co-owned by Patrick and Brittany alongside founders Angie and Chris Long, the club will now move its next expansion phase from concept to construction.

The deal will grow the stadium from 11,500 seats to more than 18,000. It will also add new shops, parking and public roads. Sales tax collected at the stadium will pay the city back, but the team’s owners must personally cover any missing funds. The city also set aside $150,000 for an independent study to make sure the math works.
Brittany Mahomes previously explained why a dedicated stadium mattered to her from the very start, saying, “These women deserve to feel important and have their own facility so that they can perform at their best. I hope this sets the bar for women’s sports everywhere and other cities continue to build around women’s sports. Just like young boys get to dream of playing football at stadiums like Arrowhead, I want young girls everywhere to aspire to play at stadiums like CPKC.”
Pat joined the ownership group in January 2023, making him the first active NFL player to own a stake in an NWSL team. His investment quickly paid off as Forbes valued the Current at $325 million in 2026, making it the second-most valuable team in the league behind Angel City FC’s $340 million.
Winning the 2024 Summer Cup and the 2025 NWSL Shield, they backed up that price tag. CPKC Stadium opened in 2024 as the world’s first venue built specifically for a women’s pro team, following a $140 million construction project that has sold out every home game since.
