Four Premier League games, no defeats. It may not sound particularly spectacular, but Everton’s start is beginning to look a decent one.
Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham certainly wasn’t perfect. Everton spent plenty of time without the ball and David Moyes admitted afterwards that he wanted more from his players in possession.
Yet they came away with a point and, on the chances created, had every right to wonder whether it should have been three.
Everton are proving hard to beat
For all Tottenham’s possession, Jordan Pickford didn’t exactly spend the afternoon under siege. Spurs managed 14 attempts but only two on target, producing 0.64 expected goals. Everton’s 12 efforts were worth 1.17 xG, with Brennan Johnson, Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all having chances.
It wasn’t hugely dissimilar to the Manchester United game in one respect. Everton had awkward spells, stuck at it and made sure they got something from the afternoon. There is plenty of Moyes in that.
Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski were excellent at Tottenham, Vitaliy Mykolenko did his job, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles continues to settle quickly. Harrison Armstrong, meanwhile, looks increasingly at home in this team.
None of which means the concerns of a fortnight ago have disappeared. Moyes wanted a bigger squad coming out of the transfer window, and there are positions where Everton remain light. An injury or two in the wrong areas could change the picture pretty quickly.
They can play better than they did at Tottenham too. But after everything that went on at the end of the transfer window, four games unbeaten will do nicely.
Nothing to get too excited about. But it’s been a decent start.
