Ettore Messina is set to launch the next chapter of his storied basketball career following his departure from Olimpia Milano.
According to Walter Fuochi of La Repubblica, the veteran Italian strategist is heading back to North America to join the Atlanta Hawks in a advisory role, reuniting with head coach Quin Snyder, who previously served as Messina's assistant during his tenure at CSKA Moscow.
A Hybrid Role Split Between the US and Italy
Unlike his previous full-time assistant coaching stints in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, Messina’s commitment with Atlanta will not require a permanent, full-time stay in the United States.
He will balance his advisory responsibilities for the Hawks with broadcasting work in Italy, serving as a television analyst for Sky Sports.
Closing a Major Chapter with Olimpia Milano
This move signals a total transition following seven impactful years in Milan, which began in the summer of 2019 when he took on dual responsibilities as head coach and President of Basketball Operations.
Under his leadership, Milano reached the EuroLeague Final Four in 2021, ending a 29-year drought, and captured three Italian League titles, two Italian Cups, and three Supercups.
Messina stepped down from his head coaching post in November 2025, citing the mental toll of intense public scrutiny, while handing bench duties over to Peppe Poeta.
He remained in Milano’s front office focused on long-term strategy until officially parting ways with the organization in June 2026.
