Jayden Daniels and his dispute with LSU are among the more bizarre moments of the NFL offseason.
During the offseason, Daniels sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU after he learned that a current player was slated to wear the Washington Commanders star's No. 5 jersey. What's more, the 25-year-old's representatives requested that LSU give Daniels its Heisman Trophy, escalating the dispute.
Now, the two sides head into their respective seasons with no resolution to what has become a very public back-and-forth as a number of organizations and teams have made their thoughts clear on the dispute.
The Dispute
Heading into the 2026 season, LSU promised D.J. Pickett the opportunity to wear the No. 5 jersey, which Daniels wore as a Tiger. Though Daniels was highly successful during his time with LSU, his number was not formally retired, allowing Pickett, who originally wore No. 3, to wear it again in theory.
Since Daniels was drafted, no player had worn the number, and when Pickett was revealed to be wearing it next, the star's representatives reached out to the university. What's more, the 25-year-old reportedly asked LSU for a copy of the Heisman Trophy the school received when he won the award.
Whenever a player wins the Heisman Trophy, both the player and the university receive a trophy. With the dispute in full swing, Daniels and his camp took another step in ensuring LSU will not be able to reference him in any way.

The Response
At the height of the controversy, the Commanders' star took to social media to state his position, hoping the dispute would be resolved in a way that appeased both his side and the university. "I have been locked in on training camp and that's been my number one focus," he posted on Instagram.
"I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I'm proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there." He added, "Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders' football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved."
Daniels' social media statement came after one of his representatives sent a letter, which was obtained by ESPN, to LSU informing the university that it could no longer use Daniels' name, image and likeness. "Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected," the statement began.
"His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU."
As a result of the back-and-forth between the star and the university, Daniels and his mother have been mocked online for the head-scratching decision to battle LSU. Regina Jackson, Daniels' mother, is an NFLPA-certified agent and business manager, with some believing it was her decision to butt heads with the university.
At one point, MLB and NASCAR teams even made fun of the situation while other organizations failed to mention the number five, in hopes of avoiding a similar legal battle.
Notably, the New York Mets waded in on the conversation after beating the Washington Nationals, 4-1. "Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels #LGM #MetsWin," the team's post read after the win.
The Commanders' fight game of the season will be against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13.
