The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2026 NFL season with more hype than maybe any team beyond the 2007 New England Patriots. Their aspirations were immediately checked in Week 1, when they lost 27-7 to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. Now, they’re dealing with even more adversity.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, edge rusher Myles Garrett will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and be placed on injured reserve. As a result, the NFL’s single-season sack record holder will miss at least the next four games.
Garrett did not look like his usual self against the 49ers. He failed to record a tackle for just the fourth time in his NFL career in Week 1. It was easy to chalk his sluggish showing up to the Rams’ flight plans and San Francisco left tackle Trent Williams, who’s one of the best offensive linemen in league history. However, in wake of this news, there was clearly more to the performance than jet lag.
Los Angeles will now face at least the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills without Garrett. The Rams have plenty of star power beyond Garrett, but those foes are quite a gauntlet to encounter without the man many fans and analysts believe to be the best defensive player in football.
