Bayern Munich could offer Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz a way back to the safety of the Bundesliga, should the 23-year-old continue to struggle at Anfield.

The Reds paid a staggering £116 million to sign Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 and the player has now made 54 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, despite managing just seven goals and 11 assists.

Wirtz has been an ever-present in the starting XI under new manager Andoni Iraola, and clearly has the Spaniard's backing. However, Bayern Munich appear aware that it's not all coming up roses for the playmaker in the Premier League.

TEAMtalk report that Bayern Munich have 'long-standing admiration' for the Germany international and that the feeling has not wavered, despite a drop in form since making the move to Liverpool.

The Bundesliga giants attempted to complete a deal for Wirtz at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but were priced out of a deal by Liverpool.

The report adds that there are concerns internally in Liverpool over whether Wirtz will be able to become as prolific as he was at Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have not yet decided to cash in on the player and hope that Iraola will bring out his best, but Bayern Munich are aware of the situation.

A move back to the Bundesliga would offer Wirtz the chance to play in a division he knows well. The midfielder has 140 Bundesliga appearances to his name, picking up 10 goals and 13 assists in the division over the 2024/25 campaign.

The update comes after Liverpool put in a toothless performance in a 0-0 draw against struggling Fulham at Anfield. Wirtz played 90 minutes in that match, but failed to create much magic for his side.

Florian Wirtz WhoScored Player Ratings 2026/27:

August 23, Newcastle United v Liverpool - 6.4

August 29, Liverpool v Nottingham Forest - 7.1

September 4, Ipswich Town v Liverpool - 7

September 9, Liverpool v Atletico Madrid - 6.8

September 12, Liverpool v Fulham - 6.6

There have been some criticisms over the player's workrate, but those are often deemed unfair - the midfielder covered the most ground in midweek against Atletico Madrid. Wirtz played well in that match but, as has become expected, those efforts were quickly forgotten as a good start against Fulham meandered its way towards anonymity.

The latest Bayern Munich links come after a week when Iraola has outspokenly backed Wirtz to come good at Liverpool. Prior to the Fulham fixture, he said: "He played very well against Atletico Madrid.

"The game against Ipswich in the second half he lost more balls than normal but overall I have been very happy with his performances.

"He is a good player out of possession who helps us in our press. But he runs the same as the 10 of Arsenal, the 10 of (Manchester) City, the 10 of Fulham and more or less his stats are very similar to the number 10s other teams have.”
