WSL Match Report Aston Villa 1-4 Man City: City Pull Clear After Villa Fightback

Aston Villa vs Manchester City at Villa Park 13 September 2026

Manchester City made it two wins from two in the Women’s Super League with a 4–1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Jade Rose and Mary Fowler put City 2–0 ahead before Amalie Vangsgaard gave Villa hope shortly before half-time. The hosts threatened an equaliser early in the second half, but Khadija Shaw eventually restored City’s two-goal advantage before Lauren Hemp added a late fourth.

City take control after an even start

The opening stages were relatively calm, with Villa initially making it difficult for City to find spaces. Noelle Maritz looked for Chasity Grant behind the City defence, while Mia McAulay tested Alex Greenwood down the right. City gradually began to find their combinations, however, and Shaw soon had an effort blocked by Anna Patten.

The resulting corner produced the opening goal. Villa goalkeeper Okuma initially looked to collect the delivery before pushing the ball away. Rose reacted quickest to the loose ball and finished from close range.

Villa became more careless in possession immediately after conceding, twice giving the ball back to City in dangerous areas. The visitors remained patient rather than forcing the issue, moving Villa around and waiting for openings. That approach eventually produced an excellent second goal.

Hemp found Fowler, who played into Shaw before continuing her run. Shaw held up the ball and returned it to Fowler in space just inside the penalty area, allowing the Australian to find the bottom corner.

Villa responded at an important moment. McAulay released Grant down the flank, and her low delivery found Vangsgaard inside the box. The Denmark international converted to make it 2–1 shortly before half-time and bring Villa straight back into the contest.

Villa threaten before Shaw strikes

Villa showed more attacking intent after the restart. McAulay drove towards goal after being found by Lynn Wilms, although her effort lacked the power to trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Grant then produced an excellent turn before attacking the City defence, but chose to shoot rather than release Wilms in space to her right and saw her attempt blocked.

City remained the more dangerous side. Hemp sent a first-time effort wide before Shaw powered a header against the crossbar in the 57th minute. Okuma then produced an excellent save from Hemp at close range to keep Villa within one goal.

The hosts were still fighting for an equaliser, but City’s third eventually ended their momentum. Another loose ball from Kendall was collected by Shaw, who combined with Hemp before continuing into the penalty area. Hemp returned the ball to the striker, and Shaw calmly lifted her finish over Okuma.

It was another impressive combination between two of City’s most dangerous attacking players and Shaw’s third WSL goal in two matches following her opening-weekend brace against Birmingham City.

Hemp completes the victory

Villa continued to compete despite falling 3–1 behind. Wilms produced an excellent sliding intervention to stop another City break involving Shaw and Hemp, before Miri Taylor responded at the other end with a powerful effort that Yamashita saved.

City nevertheless had the final say. With only seconds remaining, substitute Beth Mead released Hemp behind the Villa defence. The winger drove towards goal and saw her shot deflect off Ingrid Harviken and into the net to complete the 4–1 victory.

The final statistics reflected City’s overall control. The visitors registered 23 shots to Villa’s five and generated 2.20 xG compared with Villa’s 0.63.

Interestingly, the difference in shots on target was much smaller at six to four, showing that Villa did create some genuine danger from their limited attacking opportunities.

For a period after Vangsgaard’s goal, an equaliser remained possible. Villa started the second half positively and Okuma made an excellent save to keep the deficit at one. City ultimately had too much quality.

Fowler’s finish was one of the best moments of the match, while Shaw’s hold-up play and combination with Hemp repeatedly caused Villa problems. Her second-half goal effectively settled the contest before Hemp made the scoreline more emphatic at the end.
