Kyra Cooney-Cross penned an emotional letter to Arsenal fans in the club’s matchday programme as the Matildas star made her return to the Women’s Super League and Emirates Stadium.
Cooney-Cross was in the starting XI as Arsenal drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in the WSL on Sunday – her first appearance since the death of her mother in July.

It was the 24-year-old midfielder’s first appearance of 2026, a significant moment for Cooney-Cross as she continues to deal with the loss of her mum Jess to cancer two months ago, having been diagnosed in January.
In Arsenal’s matchday programme, Cooney-Cross wrote: “Dear Arsenal Fans.

“A new season, a new start, back at the Emirates together. It is always special to play here.
“It was here at this stadium, on October 12 last year, that my Mum watched me live for the last time. A lot has happened and a lot has changed since then. It was Mum’s first time in the UK. It was a last-minute trip. I needed her, and she came, like she always has for the past 24 years.
“I am so grateful that I have the picture of the two of us standing together on this pitch. Not long after that day, with the support of the club, Clare and Renee, I was able to go home indefinitely to be with my Mum and my family.
“The outpouring of love and support we received from you is something that will never leave me or my family. We are eternally grateful to each and every one of you. It’s hard to find more words of gratitude, but I promise you that I will do everything I can to show you in the only way a footballer can, on the pitch.
“My world is far away from the Emirates, but seeing every sign, every message and hearing every song kept me close. Coming back to the UK was made easier because I have a family here.
“Mum was so good at sending me messages before games, so here is one she sent before today, for all of us: ‘Kyra, try to remember what it felt like when you were little.. when you just loved having the ball at your feet, playing with your mates, testing yourself against the boys or adults for the fun of it.
“Back then, it wasn’t about proving anything…. it was about the feeling, the freedom, the creativity, the joy of pushing yourself. Play because you love the ball at your feet, the rhythm of the game. Train because it feels good to move and challenge your body and feel strong
“This is how you start doing it for you again – Mum.
“It’s for you, Mum. Love, Kyra & Family.”
