Ben Johnson sends Bears urgent message after dominant Week 1 win image
The Chicago Bears delivered one of the NFL’s loudest opening statements Sunday. Ben Johnson responded by immediately starting the clock on their next challenge.
Chicago defeated the Carolina Panthers, 59-37, behind a spectacular offensive performance. The Bears piled up 552 yards, scored eight touchdowns and produced two 100-yard rushers while earning their first victory of the 2026 season. Johnson appreciated the accomplishment. He also made sure his players understood that one explosive afternoon did not guarantee anything beyond a 1-0 record.
“We talked about with the team, find a way to get to the plane with a win. And we did that,” Johnson told reporters. “We accomplished that. Now we’re in a race to improve, in all three phases and collectively as a team. That’s what we gotta do.”
It was the right message after a game that showed both Chicago’s enormous upside and its most obvious weakness.
Bears defense gives Johnson reason for concern
The offense looked ready to challenge anyone. The defense did not.
Carolina scored 37 points and repeatedly found ways to move the ball against Dennis Allen’s unit. The Bears had enough offensive firepower to overcome those breakdowns, but that cannot become their weekly formula. Chicago’s defense entered the season with increased expectations after an offseason of change. Allowing 37 points to a Panthers offense carrying its own questions created an immediate area of concern.
Johnson did not single out one player or coordinator. Instead, he challenged the entire team to treat its opening performance as a starting point.
“I told those guys, you’d like to think in a long season like this, we’re playing our worst football early on and we continue to get better and better and better,” Johnson said. “That’s really the message right there. In all three phases, we all have to get better each and every week.”
That approach allows Johnson to acknowledge the defensive problems without allowing them to overshadow a valuable road win.

Chicago’s ceiling remains incredibly high
The exciting part for Bears fans is that Chicago won by 22 points without delivering the complete performance Johnson wants. Caleb Williams accounted for four touchdowns. D’Andre Swift rushed for 124 yards, while Kyle Monangai added 100. Chicago produced 291 yards on the ground and scored six rushing touchdowns.
The Bears’ ability to dominate with their rushing attack should make the offense difficult to defend. Williams does not need to throw 40 or 50 times for Chicago to create big plays and score quickly. Johnson, however, knows the Bears will eventually encounter an opponent capable of slowing that attack. When that happens, Chicago’s defense and special teams will need to carry more of the burden.
That explains the urgency behind his postgame message.
The Bears are competing against their schedule, their opponents and the expectations created by last season’s success. They are also competing against themselves to correct problems before those mistakes cost them a game.
Chicago could have celebrated 59 points and moved forward without asking difficult questions. Johnson chose to remind his players that the race to improve began before they even left Carolina.
