While new Ravens HC Jesse Minter is enjoying his first victory, injuries to WRs Zay Flowers and Ja’Kobi Lane risk limiting the offense. Granted, QB Lamar Jackson and RB Derrick Henry seemed to have no problem shouldering the load. Nobody wants to be down some of their top receivers.
Flowers exited the game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury, but not before putting up 150 yards. Ja’Kobi Lane, the rookie, caught just one pass for 11 yards. But he had an impressive offseason that had his teammates and coaches raving. He figures to be a big part of the passing game, but his time will have to wait. According to Mike Garafolo, initial indications are he suffered a fractured wrist. Further tests will be required today to determine the extent of the injury and possible time missed, but a stint on IR certainly seems possible.

“We’ll have to see what we got to do this week to get that [wide receiver] room ready for next week”, Jesse Minter admitted in his post-game press conference. Flowers is far and away the team’s top target. Rashod Bateman only drew one target and did not finish with a catch. Only TE Mark Andrews and Chris Moore had 20-plus total receiving yards. And Moore’s came on one 53-yard catch.
The Ravens have historically struggled to draft and develop at the wide receiver position. Ja’Kobi Lane, a third-round pick out of USC, could have as good a shot as most. At 6-4 and with a sub-4.5-second 40-yard dash time, he has enviable physical ability. And he can make very impressive catches—even if he doesn’t always make the routine ones.
But Lane wasn’t a focal point of the Ravens’ passing game yet, let alone the offense. Zay Flowers missing time would certainly have a much bigger impact, and if he misses next week, Baltimore will have to figure out how to conjure up a passing game to prevent from being overly one-dimensional.
Still, the Ravens put up 41 points in Minter’s debut, and Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards on 24 attempts with 3 touchdowns. Lamar Jackson threw for 324 yards, going 17-for-25, with 1 touchdown pass, running for another on 7 attempts for 40 yards.
During the preseason, Ja’Kobi Lane caught 4 passes for 47 yards with 1 touchdown. The Ravens allowed rookie QB Joe Fagnano to play about three-fourths of their preseason snaps, with Jackson not playing at all, though, so it’s not like they were showcasing the passing game.
With Bateman having is own issues, the Ravens do need another receiving threat to step up. if they have to play a game without Zay Flowers, it could be hard for them to move the ball through the air. And at least for the next few weeks, it seems, Lane will not be among the options available to them. That is unless further tests today reveal surprisingly good news about his wrist injury.
