Foden sees red but ten men City take the points at Old Trafford

Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a match where they were without a man for most of the game. The win continued new manager Enzo Maresca’s perfect league start and kept City as one of only two teams to have not dropped points this season. Donnarumma started in goal. Nunes, Guehi, Dias, and Gvardiol were in defence. Anderson, Fernandez, and Cherki were in midfield with Semenyo, Foden, and Haaland in attack.

United were the stronger team in the early stages and had a lot of possession in City’s half, putting them under constant pressure, but their lack of end-product let them down. On many occasions, they were unable to trouble Donnarumma too much and multiple shots were fired wide.

City still struggled to get out their half of the pitch in the opening stages and the best chance they had was when a Fernandes blunder led to Haaland having the ball in a dangerous position 1v1 against the goalkeeper, but he lost the ball after attempting to pass it to Foden on the right.

The big turning point in the match came in the 23rd minute when an incident between Foden and Fernandes concerned where Foden appeared to be brought down and kicked by the United captain. Foden reacted by kicking his legs back at Fernandes while on the ground and subsequently was shown a red card for violent conduct.

At this point, it felt like a disaster for City, who were already on the back foot and were now down to ten men. However, City seemed to look better without the extra man and United were not maximising their extra man advantage. In the 43rd minute, the home side did come close to taking the lead after a free kick taken by Rashford rattled the post, but that was the closest they came to scoring in the first half and it was goalless at the break.

United continued to try and break down the City at the start of the second half but could not convert their chances. Mainoo came close to giving United the lead with a long-range effort which again rattled off the post.

Despite all of United’s efforts, City were dangerous on the counter. In the 60th minute, a cross from Gvardiol found Haaland who put the ball in the back of the net to give City the lead. Haaland was initially flagged offside, cutting short the celebrations but after a lengthy review, he was deemed onside by being played on by Dorgu and the goal was awarded.

City held firm at the back and continued to frustrate United from this point onwards, not allowing them a way through and clearing the ball effectively, quashing each attempt. At the very end of the game, Mbuemo had a clear chance to equalise, but his shot was parried over from Donnarumma. The final whistle went shortly after and City took the points.

The result continues City’s perfect league start under Maresca and they sit 2nd in the table below Arsenal on goal difference. The performance showed that City are capable of grinding out wins in big games from difficult positions and shows promising early signs for Maresca, who produced a very strong tactical performance in this match. City’s next game will be against Norwich in the League Cup on Thursday and then they will face Sunderland at home in the Premier League next Sunday.
