Manchester City star Phil Foden was left 'gutted' after his red card in the controversial 1-0 win over Manchester United. The England international was sent off for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes after 23 minutes.
The Portuguese fouled Foden before appearing to kick the 26-year-old on the ground, prompting the playmaker to retaliate, leaving the United man in a heap. Michael Oliver brandished a straight red card, reducing Enzo Maresca's side down to 10 men for over an hour.
Erling Haaland's effort on 60 minutes proved decisive, but also brought controversy on the Manchester derby despite the video assistant referee overturning an initial offside decision.
Foden was spotted exiting Old Trafford and displaying a '0-1' signal with his hands to supporters. In a post to Instagram, he lauded his teammates while highlighting his disappointment at not playing a part in the famous triumph.
He said: "Unbelievable performance from the lads. Gutted I didn't get to play my part properly. Proud to be Blue."
The 26-year-old is expected to serve a three-match ban for violent conduct, meaning he will miss the visit from Norwich City on Thursday in the Carabao Cup and Sunderland (September 20). The final match of his suspension will be on October 11 when they travel to face Liverpool.
Former United captain Roy Keane sympathised with Foden for his dismissal and felt that Fernandes got away with sanction.
He said: "Bruno tackles him, fouls him, gives him a little boot on the floor, reacts and he's now sent off. Bruno catches him, Foden sent off, I guess it's classed as violent and to me, Bruno is the one who is violent.

"I have to call it out, called it with Kyle Walker a few years ago when he went down after a headbutt, we see violent differently. I don't think that's a red card for Foden, I don't.
"'Did the referee get given a chance?' Foden is daft here but so is Bruno. If Bruno got sent off, we'd be saying, 'it was a daft, a bit silly.' Everyone's in a union, you've got to look out for each other.
"We saw Walker a few years ago do it with a headbutt, Bruno has got to do better there. It's a big game, you've got to look after the opposition players as well. Foden, I don't think it's a red card."
