Roberto De Zerbi has indicated he will be making wholesale changes for Tottenham’s visit to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup after going another league match without a goal.
After a summer of busy transfer activity, Tottenham remain winless in the Premier League and without a goal ahead of their midweek visit to Anfield.
Their only success so far this season has been in the League Cup, with a 5-1 win over the Championship’s Charlton in the previous round.
And following his side’s goalless draw against Everton over the weekend, De Zerbi hinted he will utilise his squad and make a lot of changes.
“Now we play Tuesday in Liverpool, and we play with all other players, but it will be a very important match for us,” Tottenham’s coach told reporters.
“We can improve playing in the games, we can improve during the week.”
The opportunity for change could also be prompted by Spurs’ inability to score in the league, with De Zerbi acknowledging it is a “mental block.”
“A mental block, because four games, no wins, any goals scored,” he said. “It is tough also for the players because they are human and they are very good guys.”
Potential Tottenham XI vs. Liverpool: Dubravka; Gray, Senesi, Tosin, Davies; Gallagher, Bergvall; Tel, Maddison, Kudus; Richarlison
With changes beckoning, Andy Robertson’s return to Anfield is likely to come on the bench, with the left-back starting three of Spurs’ four league games so far.
Richarlison, who failed to complete a transfer in the summer, could be in contention, as could Marcos Senesi, Ben Davies, Conor Gallagher, James Maddison, Mathys Tel and Lucas Bargvall, all of whom did not start on the weekend.
Liverpool also set for changes vs. Tottenham
After Andoni Iraola noted his attackers “lacked a little bit of freshness” in an overall sluggish display against Fulham, changes also beckon for Liverpool.
Giorgi Mamardashvili, Trey Nyoni, Wataru Endo, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha, and Lewis Koumas will be among those in contention to start, while Luke Chambers and James McConnell may also be considered.
Liverpool’s squad is not the biggest, and there could be an overlap ahead of the Premier League trip to Bournemouth on Sunday.
