Jarrad Branthwaite spent a month in Germany during the summer as theEverton defender sought solutions to his injury problems, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland.
It adds some context to what Branthwaite has been through after injuries disrupted his football, with Boyland describing it as a “mentally tough” period for the 24-year-old.
The signs now are much more encouraging. Branthwaite is playing regularly again and produced an excellent performance at the heart of David Moyes’ defence in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham.
Patrick Boyland reveals Branthwaite’s Germany stay
Writing on Sunday, Boyland revealed that Branthwaite had spent a month in Germany over the summer “seeking solutions to his injury issues”. The Athletic reporter added that Branthwaite now looks close to his best again and has his sights set on putting together a sustained run of games.
His performance at Spurs certainly fitted with that assessment. Branthwaite produced a series of important interventions as Everton dealt with a difficult opening to the game before growing into it themselves. Moyes was full of praise afterwards and also backed Branthwaite’s England prospects, placing him among the country’s best centre-backs and saying there is “far more to come” from him.
That will be a conversation for another day. The more immediate encouragement for Everton is that Branthwaite is back playing regularly and beginning to look much more like the defender they know he can be.
After the problems of the last year or so, keeping that run going is the important bit now.
