Phil Foden faces a spell on the sidelines through suspension after his red card in Manchester City’s win over Manchester United. Foden was sent off after kicking Bruno Fernandes, with the City star reacting after the United captain appeared to kick him first in an attempt to regain possession.
Referee Michael Oliver gave Foden his marching orders in the 23rd minute of the match, meaning Enzo Maresca’s side had to go through the majority of the contest with just 10 men. City managed to claim a dramatic victory in the Manchester derby thanks to Erling Haaland, who scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.
However, Foden's red card means Maresca will not have the playmaker available for the next few games. Foden now faces a three-game ban following his red card, with the England international set to miss the Carabao Cup tie against Norwich City on Thursday night.
Premier League rules state that red cards issued in the competition also apply to other domestic cup competitions, including the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
This does not apply to yellow cards, however, which will remain competition-specific. As a result, City’s clash against Norwich later this week will be the first game that Foden will miss due to the suspension.

Foden will then be unavailable for City’s return to Premier League action this weekend against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, as well as the away trip to Liverpool on October 11 after the international break.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher explained why the correct decision was made to give Foden a red card, but also believed Fernandes was also deserving of a punishment.

"I think red card for Foden and Fernandes is very lucky to escape a sanction. He should've got a yellow card,” Gallagher said on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch programme. I don't think it [Fernandes' kick] is violent."
Maresca also explained why he agreed with the decision to send off Foden, but that Fernandes should also have been given a red card.
"I think Phil Foden's red card is a red card but I also think in the same action it's a red card from Bruno," Maresca said.
"I think reviewing the action, it is clear red card for Phil because it is a reaction but you can also see Bruno's intention so it's a red card for Phil but it's also a red card for Bruno.
"For the goal, the fourth official said to me that Erling was onside and they were just checking on the action so nothing to add. I think Erling was onside and Enzo doesn't interfere with the action."
