Celtics reportedly sign $22M defensive menace, former first-rounder to pair with Jayson Tatum image
The Boston Celtics have a sour taste in their mouth after getting upset in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. The Celtics are looking to make a serious run this postseason as they feel like they have improved by parting ways with Jaylen Brown.
They still have one roster spot remaining for the season. It has been known that Boston has been interested in signing former first-round pick Devin Carter.
“The Boston Celtics have shown interest in signing Devin Carter, sources say, once the Providence product clears waivers," Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer wrote.
Carter is great on the defensive side of the ball, but it is his jump shot that still needs to improve. He was drafted by the Sacramento Kings, and they traded him to the Atlanta Hawks last season. Atlanta waived Carter recently, allowing him to become a free agent for the first time in his career.
“The Atlanta Hawks have waived Devin Carter, league sources told hoopshype. The 24-year-old guard averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes during 38 games played for the Sacramento Kings last season,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto wrote.
On Monday, the interest from the Celtics became mutual for Carter as the two sides agreed to a deal for the upcoming season.
“The Boston Celtics and Devin Carter have agreed to a deal, league sources told hoopshype. Carter will compete for an NBA roster or two-way spot in camp. Carter averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes during 38 games for the Sacramento Kings last season,” Scotto wrote.
It will be very interesting to see what kind of contract Carter gets signed to, as Boston has one roster spot left and one two-way spot left. Boston will decide what to do as Carter shows what he has in training camp.
Carter was on a $22 million rookie deal before being waived. The former first-round pick will look to learn from guys like Jayson Tatum and Derrick White. There is a lot of value in getting Carter on a potential small deal.
