Philippe Coutinho’s career has taken him from Anfield to the Camp Nou, from Bavaria to Birmingham, and back to his native Brazil.
Few of his former Liverpool team-mates would have predicted where his next chapter begins.

The Brazilian spent seven months without a club after a difficult departure from Vasco da Gama in February. That search for a new home has now ended.
Coutinho, once Liverpool’s “Little Magician,” has completed a move to Santos, the club that shaped Pele’s legend and now aims to revive its own.
Santos confirmed the signing in an official statement: “Santos Futebol Clube has finalised the signing of Philippe Coutinho for the remainder of the season.
“With his renowned technical skill and game vision, along with a winning career in Europe and the Brazilian National Team, the midfielder joins Peixe on a contract valid until the end of 2026.”
The club added: “Welcome to the Kingdom of Football, Coutinho. Go get ’em!”
The move reunites Coutinho with Neymar, his close friend since their days together in Brazil’s youth ranks.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the pair had long wanted to play alongside each other again, and Neymar publicly campaigned for the signing before it was finalised.
The transfer was accelerated by injury. Neymar sustained a grade 2B muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his right thigh earlier this month, ruling him out for around two months. Santos moved quickly to bring in Coutinho as cover for their creative void.
Coutinho arrives as a free agent on a short-term deal running until the end of 2026. He had been without a club since February, when he terminated his contract with Vasco da Gama amid criticism of his performances at the Rio de Janeiro club. He had not played a competitive match since February 14.
Liverpool fans will remember Coutinho for a five-year spell between 2013 and 2018 that yielded 54 goals in 201 appearances.
He joined from Inter Milan for a fee reported as either £8 million or £8.5 million, depending on the source, and left for Barcelona in a deal reportedly worth up to £142 million, becoming one of the club’s most profitable sales.
After Barcelona, Coutinho spent a season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he scored twice against his parent club in an 8-2 Champions League quarter-final win in 2020.
He later moved to Aston Villa, first on loan and then permanently, before his form dipped under Unai Emery.
He was subsequently loaned to Qatari club Al-Duhail, then to Vasco da Gama, before signing for the Rio club permanently in 2025.
Santos have spent this Brasileirao campaign fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone.
The club remains in contention for the Copa Sudamericana after beating Atletico Mineiro 2-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
Coutinho’s arrival follows other additions to the Santos squad this transfer window, including Arthur, Lima, Rodinei and Everton Cebolinha, as the club reshapes its squad for the closing months of the season.
