Marco Palestra could solve major Xabi Alonso problem exposed by Hull

Marco Palestra has not played a competitive minute for Chelsea yet, but his return could arrive at exactly the right time for Xabi Alonso.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City exposed a familiar problem. Chelsea possess enough attacking quality to hurt almost anybody, yet the balance behind that attack remains fragile.

Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead after seven minutes, only for Mohamed Belloumi to score twice in six first-half minutes and completely change the game. Joao Pedro eventually rescued a point, but Alonso admitted afterwards there were still “compulsory” parts of Chelsea’s game that needed to improve.

Chelsea’s official account of Alonso’s post-Hull assessment reflected a manager who knows his side are progressing but still lack control in important moments.

Palestra will not fix every defensive issue. But his particular qualities could help Alonso finally build the structure he has been trying to establish since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

🚨🔵 Xabi Alonso: “Marco Palestra had a quad injury but he’s in final stages of his recovery”.

“ He's quite frustrated but I told Marco: easy, the season is long, there will be a lot of games, and you will play your role, you will have your minutes”. pic.twitter.com/9c7IVs9Dwy

Hull exposed Chelsea’s balance problem

Chelsea’s attacking numbers can disguise what happens when possession breaks down.

Hull restricted Alonso’s side to only 0.89 expected goals despite Chelsea spending long periods on the front foot, while repeatedly threatening through transitions and moments when the hosts lost their defensive shape.

Belloumi’s quick-fire double was another reminder of Chelsea’s difficulty controlling matches once opponents break their initial pressure.

That problem is bigger than one defender.

ReadChelsea’s player ratings from the Hull draw reflected an afternoon when Chelsea’s attacking players again produced moments of quality but the defensive unit struggled to provide the same level of security.

Alonso needs a structure which can stretch opponents without leaving Chelsea vulnerable every time possession changes hands.

That is where Palestra becomes particularly interesting.

Why Marco Palestra fits Alonso’s Chelsea system

Alonso spent much of pre-season building Chelsea around three central defenders and two aggressive wing-backs.

Chelsea’s own analysis of Alonso’s pre-season system noted that the Spaniard used a back three in each of the final three warm-up matches, with Palestra regularly occupying extremely advanced positions.

ReadChelsea had already identified that structure in its 3-4-2-1 tactical analysis after the AC Milan win.

The principle matters because of the players Alonso wants to use centrally.

Cole Palmer and Rogers are most dangerous when they can receive between the lines rather than remain pinned to the touchline.

Joao Pedro also wants to combine through central areas.

If those players move inside, somebody else has to provide the width.

A wing-back capable of starting deep, carrying the ball forward and repeatedly reaching the final third allows Alonso to create that width without sacrificing one of his creative players.

Palestra was effectively recruited for that job.

Palestra offers something Chelsea currently lack

Chelsea knew they were signing an unusually versatile defender.

The 21-year-old played as both a full-back and wing-back in Italy and can operate on either flank. Alonso has already described Palestra as “something different”, highlighting both his versatility and energy after watching him throughout pre-season.

The Premier League’s own scouting analysis of Palestra reached a similar conclusion.

His acceleration, dribbling and ability to overlap make him a natural fit for the sort of wing-back role Alonso previously used to stretch opponents, while his ability to play from either side gives Chelsea greater flexibility within matches.

Chelsea also noted before the season that Palestra had recorded the fastest average speed in Serie A during the previous campaign and regularly beat opponents through take-ons.

That recovery speed could be as important as his attacking work.

A Chelsea wing-back under Alonso cannot simply stand high and create width. He also has to recover quickly when possession is lost and help prevent the opposition turning a Chelsea attack into an immediate counter.

Palestra’s athleticism gives Alonso a player capable of doing both.

It was why his pre-season performances had already left the head coach facing an intriguing selection decision, something ReadChelsea examined when Palestra began forcing his way into Alonso’s plans.

Palestra cannot fix Chelsea’s defence alone

There is a danger of turning an injured player into the solution to every problem.

Palestra should not be treated that way.

Chelsea’s issues against Hull extended beyond the wing-back positions.

There were individual errors, problems defending transitions and moments when Alonso’s side failed to control the game after taking the lead.

Palestra cannot solve those weaknesses on his own.

What he can do is make Alonso’s preferred structure easier to execute.

A natural, athletic wing-back allows the attacking midfielders to stay in their strongest areas while giving Chelsea width and providing the recovery speed needed when moves break down.

That could create a better balance between the aggressive Chelsea Alonso wants and the controlled Chelsea he still needs to build.

Brentford could provide first opportunity

The encouraging news is that Palestra is close.

Alonso has confirmed the summer signing suffered a quad injury shortly before the Premier League opener and is now in the final stages of rehabilitation.

Chelsea’s latest official Palestra fitness update says Brentford remains a possible return date, with Alonso expecting the defender to be ready for Bournemouth if Friday comes too soon.

There is no reason for Chelsea to rush him.

Palestra is 21, has not yet played a competitive game in English football and is returning from an injury which has already kept him out for several weeks.

But the bigger picture is increasingly clear.

Chelsea signed Palestra because his profile suits what Alonso wants his team to become.

After Hull exposed just how difficult it remains for Chelsea to combine attacking ambition with defensive control, his return suddenly feels even more important.
