Malick Thiaw: Liverpool and Man United face£70m hurdle

Liverpool are heavily interested in Malick Thiaw, as per latest transfer news. Alongside the Reds, their arch rival Man United are also in the race for the Newcastle defender. Liverpool will try to bring him next summer to replace one of their club legends. However, Newcastle’s sporting director Ross Wilson has thrown some light on Iraola’s side chances to get Thiaw.

Liverpool and Man United will fight to bring Malick Thiaw on board

As reported by CaughtOffside, Liverpool and Manchester United both are keeping a close eye on Malick Thiaw. Both the English giants are observing several players on that position for next transfer window. The Premier League sides aim to improve their defense next season. The German centre-back is high on the list of both the clubs.

The 25-year-old joined the Magpies from AC Milan last summer in 2025 for €35m, according to Transfermarkt. Since then, the German international has become well accustomed to English football. He has been a pivotal figure in the defense line at St. James’ Park. Thiaw is very good at dealing with attackers in large spaces and his physical strength perfectly fits Premier League’s style. The defender will definitely strengthen the backline of the club he joins next season.

However, Newcastle United are not interested to offload him. His contract with the Magpies will end in 2029. They will ask around €75m-€85m for him although his market value is €45m.

Malick Thiaw’s stats for Newcastle United in 2025-26 season, according to FOTMOB:

Competitions Appearances Clean Sheets Duels Won(%) Defensive Contributions

Premier League 35 4 64.5% 292

FA Cup 3 0 72.7% 34

EFL Cup 5 1 53.8% 37

UEFA Champions League 11 4 60.3% 73

Why do Liverpool and Man United need him?

The Reds and the Red Devils have both tracked his performances so far. But they have not conducted official talks or discussions for the player . Liverpool’s objective to enter the race is quite understandable. They need a replacement for Virgil Van Dijk as the Dutch international may leave Anfield very soon. Andoni Iraola’s system requires a central defender who would serve them for many years.

Man United also need a centre back in their squad. Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt have been highly injury prone during their time at Old Trafford. Hence, the Manchester side need a player on that position who will ensure regular availability. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are also in the squad but they are very young. United need someone who is in his prime and knows the demands of Premier League.

Ross Wilson has given his views over Thiaw’s potential transfer

As reported by ESPN India, Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson have said something that has pleased Liverpool. The Reds were already working to get Malick Thiaw for next season and Wilson’s words may make the path more easy. He said that the Magpies will sell more key players in the future transfer windows. They have already sold Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in this summer.

Ross Wilson said, “If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League, you have to trade players and if you don’t the chances are you won’t be a successful club in the Premier League. And if you don’t do it, then just keep the squad you’ve got and forevermore they’ll grow old, achieve less and leave for nothing.” He continued, “I think we want Newcastle United to be a club with anticipation and excitement. If we’re not, it probably means we’re doing it wrong.”
