Ethan Nwaneri is already proving Arsenal right over Dortmund loan

Arsenal faced an awkward decision with Ethan Nwaneri this summer.

Keeping one of Hale End’s brightest talents around Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions would have strengthened the squad, but it risked leaving the 19-year-old fighting for occasional minutes behind established first-team players.

Instead, Arsenal sent him to Borussia Dortmund.

Less than two weeks into his stay in Germany, the logic behind that decision is becoming increasingly clear.

Nwaneri started Dortmund’s 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Paderborn on Saturday and played until the 65th minute as Niko Kovač’s side maintained their perfect league start. The official Dortmund match report also recorded a second-half chance for the Arsenal loanee, whose effort was saved after Serhou Guirassy found him inside the area.

That came only days after Nwaneri gained significant Champions League experience against Villarreal.

ReadArsenal had already covered how Nwaneri was handed 55 minutes in Dortmund’s 3-2 European victory after being introduced during the first half.

Those are exactly the sort of minutes Arsenal wanted him to find.

Nwaneri is getting the football Arsenal could not guarantee

Nwaneri’s talent was never the issue.

His pathway was.

Arteta already had Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and a heavily reinforced midfield competing for the areas in which Nwaneri is most comfortable.

ReadArsenal explained that problem when Arsenal sanctioned his season-long Dortmund loan on deadline day.

Borussia Dortmund offered something different: high-level first-team football without Arsenal surrendering control of his future.

The German club were explicit about why they wanted him. Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken described Nwaneri as a “very talented and technically gifted midfielder” when confirming the loan, with the club needing another attacking option following Giannis Konstantelias’ serious injury.

Nwaneri has quickly moved beyond simply providing emergency cover.

He has already featured in the Bundesliga and Champions League, with Saturday’s Paderborn victory giving him another start in front of more than 81,000 supporters at Signal Iduna Park.

That experience is difficult to replicate through substitute appearances at Arsenal.

Dortmund environment looks ideal for Nwaneri

The choice of club matters just as much as the decision to loan him.

Dortmund have a long history of trusting young players in significant matches.

Nwaneri himself admitted he was immediately attracted to the opportunity once their interest became clear, while his England Under-21 teammate Jobe Bellingham encouraged him to make the switch.

He also arrived better prepared for life abroad after spending part of last season with Marseille.

That previous loan was less straightforward, but it exposed Nwaneri to senior football away from Arsenal and forced him outside the comfort of Hale End.

Germany now offers the next stage.

The difference is that Dortmund are already trusting him in games that matter.

A Champions League appearance followed by a Bundesliga start in the space of four days is precisely the developmental workload Arsenal could not promise him in north London.

Arsenal can already see the long-term benefit

There is still plenty Nwaneri needs to prove.

He is yet to register a goal or assist for Dortmund, and three appearances cannot define an entire season-long loan.

But Arsenal did not send him to Germany because they needed instant headline numbers.

They needed minutes, responsibility and exposure to elite football.

That is exactly what he is receiving.

ReadArsenal’s assessment of Arsenal’s summer transfer winners and losers described Nwaneri as a short-term loser from the increased competition at the Emirates but suggested the Dortmund move could ultimately create a long-term win.

The early signs support that argument.

Instead of sitting on Arsenal’s bench waiting for a cup appearance, Nwaneri is learning in the Bundesliga and Champions League for one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

If that continues, the real beneficiary will eventually be Arsenal.

The aim was never simply to find Nwaneri somewhere to play.

It was to send him somewhere that could prepare him to return ready to compete for Arteta’s first team.

Dortmund already looks capable of doing exactly that.
