Everton news&talking points: Branthwaite, Rohl, Wolves&Hill Dickinson

Jarrad Branthwaite has dominated the Everton conversation today, with more emerging about the work he put in over the summer and his return to something close to his best.

There has also been fresh injury news ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Wolves, while the transport debate around the Hill Dickinson continues. Here is today’s Everton news and talking points.

Branthwaite’s month in Germany

More detail has emerged about the difficult summer Branthwaite endured as he tried to get on top of the injury problems which disrupted last season.

Patrick Boyland revealed that the defender spent a month in Germany seeking solutions, with Branthwaite describing the period as “mentally tough”. His performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham suggested he is getting back towards his best.

Moyes has since backed Branthwaite for further England recognition after his performance in north London.

Another Branthwaite fitness boost

There was more encouraging news later in the day, with Everton’s fitness staff reportedly believing Branthwaite has now made enough progress to cope with three games in a week.

That does not necessarily mean he will start against Wolves on Wednesday. With Ipswich visiting the Hill Dickinson three days later, Moyes still has a decision to make over how heavily he rotates his squad.

Rohl and Norgaard remain out

The picture is less positive for Merlin Rohl and Christian Norgaard. Rohl suffered an injury against Manchester United which kept him out at Tottenham, and he is considered unlikely to face Wolves. Norgaard, meanwhile, is not expected to return before Everton’s trip to Hull City.

Wolves up next

Attention is already turning towards Wednesday and the Carabao Cup. Wolves knocked Everton out at the same stage last season with a 2-0 win at Molineux, while Moyes’ side reached this year’s third round by beating Preston 4-0.

The manager now has to balance another opportunity to progress in the cup against the realities of a small squad.

Hill Dickinson transport debate continues

Away from the pitch, matchday travel to and from the Hill Dickinson remains a talking point.

Sandhills station was always going to face significant pressure with almost 53,000 supporters heading towards Bramley-Moore Dock. Work has been done to increase capacity and provide alternative routes, but the question remains whether the arrangements are coping well enough and what more can realistically be done.

Tarkowski on the noise around Everton

James Tarkowski has addressed the noise surrounding Everton after a turbulent end to the transfer window. The captain acknowledged that the squad is not particularly big but insisted those inside it remain ambitious. After another clean sheet at Tottenham, Everton remain unbeaten in the Premier League after four games.
