Enzo Maresca secured victory in his debut derby clash as Manchester City manager having masterminded a 0-1 win over Michael Carrick's United, despite being down to 10-men for the majority of the contest.
That followed Phil Foden's straight red card in the 23rd minute of Sunday's contest at Old Trafford, after the midfielder was adjudged to have kicked out at Bruno Fernandes following a clash between the pair on the touchline.
Despite also appearing to have kicked Foden earlier in the same incident, Fernandes escaped punishment, but would ultimately face the punishment of defeat and a VAR review that fell in the favour of Manchester City.
Josko Gvardiol's delivery in the second-half narrowly missed the diving header attempt of Enzo Fernandez - who was in an offside position - before being converted by Erling Haaland at the back-post.

Manchester City’s £125 million signing Enzo Fernandez submitted two written transfer requests to force a Chelsea exit after the relationship with his teammates broke down, according to new reports.
The Argentine was judged to have not interfered with play despite making a clear attempt to play the ball, whilst the review ultimately confirmed the Norwegian striker to have been onside as the ball was put into the danger area by Gvardiol.
One player who was crucial in the affair and put in a typically energetic performance across the park was Manchester City's £116 million summer signing Elliot Anderson, who continues to impress and show exactly why Etihad Stadium officials worked so hard to secure his signature from Nottingham Forest during the summer's World Cup.
We are the Kings of Manchester now, says Anderson
Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, Elliot Anderson - the game's Player of the Match - was quizzed on describing Manchester City as the ‘kings of Manchester’ upon joining the club earlier in the year.
Without hesitation, the former Nottingham Forest star responded, “Yeah, we are now," in light of Erling Haaland's second-half goal providing the difference against Manchester United in the 199th derby.
Anderson proved crucial in the centre of the pitch with City down to 10-men for around 70 minutes of the contest, forming a gritty and tenacious pairing with fellow summer signing Enzo Fernandez.
“Me and Enzo, we love to fight and tackle and get on the ball and play," Anderson told broadcasters after the contest. "And we gave it our all today!"
What next for Manchester City?
Victory at Old Trafford will no doubt give Maresca and his players the necessary confidence they need to know that they are able to win matches in various ways, and in the face of adversity.
That trait will be especially important as fixtures continue to pile up, with the introduction of the Carabao Cup to the agenda this week and a home clash against Norwich City in the third round of the competition.
Next up in the Premier League is a home meeting with Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, in a game that was rearranged owing to the Thursday night allocation of the clash against the aforementioned Championship club.
