Five Chelsea absentees leave Xabi Alonso with a midfield selection headache before the Gtech derby vs high-flying Brentford under Keith Andrews.
Chelsea head into Friday’s West London derby at Brentford carrying a sizeable injury list, with Moisés Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Emegha, Dastan Satpaev and Marco Palestra unavailable for the Premier League Round 5 meeting at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Caicedo has a knock, and FotMob lists his expected return for late September, while Henderson is recovering from a wrist problem and has a similar target. Emegha is dealing with a hamstring injury, Satpaev has a thigh issue, and Palestra remains out with physical discomfort, with his return pencilled in for mid-October. Chelsea have no suspended players for the fixture, so the problems all come from fitness rather than disciplinary bans.
The timing is important. Brentford have started the campaign in lively fashion and recently put six past Birmingham and three past Tottenham. At the same time, their latest league games against Sunderland, Leeds and Bournemouth have kept the Bees unbeaten. FotMob’s current head-to-head record gives Brentford three wins, Chelsea six and five draws, although Chelsea have avoided defeat in the last five meetings.
For Alonso, Caicedo’s absence carries the biggest tactical sting. His £100m signing, which can rise to £115m through add-ons, gives Chelsea a specialist screen in front of the defence and a midfielder capable of breaking up attacks before they turn into dangerous transitions. Without him, the structure changes.
Chelsea lose Henderson too, so the usual defensive-minded cover disappears at the same time. That can force Alonso into a midfield pairing that offers passing quality but less bite when Brentford regain possession. Lavia, or another solution, may have to shoulder more defensive work, and that could leave the back four receiving pressure earlier and more often.
Why Chelsea could feel Caicedo’s absence most
Brentford’s biggest threat in this meeting may come from the speed of their pressure after losing the ball. Caicedo normally gives Chelsea a reliable first response, closing lanes, tracking runners and making the tackle that stops a promising move from becoming a break. Take that away, and Chelsea could struggle to protect the space around the centre-backs, especially if the hosts attack with numbers.
Can Chelsea cope with five absentees?
Emegha’s injury hurts attacking depth, yet Chelsea have several forward options and can spread those minutes around. The bigger concern sits in central midfield. With Caicedo and Henderson both absent, Alonso loses two players whose defensive instincts can steady a side when the tempo rises.
For a manager still shaping his midfield, this is an awkward test: protect the defence with extra legs and sacrifice some progression, or keep the ball moving and accept risk whenever Brentford spring forward in midfield. That makes this more than a routine injury update.
Chelsea can still control possession and create chances, but Brentford may test the areas left exposed after turnovers. The £115m man’s absence therefore carries a higher tactical cost than the list of five names first suggests, particularly against a side that has already shown it can punish loose defending.
Who do Chelsea face in their next 5 games?
Three of Xabi Alonso’s next 5 games are at home but then they also have tricky opponents and top 6 candidates in each game.
