Most people know David Corenswet as an unbreakable superhero, but in an upcoming biopic, he’s playing the ultimate underdog.
On Sunday, NFL fans got a first look at the trailer for the upcoming film _Mr. Irrelevant_, the story of late New York Giants running back John Tuggle.
The final pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, Tuggle (Corenswet, _Superman_) fought the odds to make the Giants roster while maneuvering around his ornery first-year head coach, Bill Parcells (Michael Shannon), and falling in love with his future wife (Isabel May), before finding out that he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
The Paramount and Skydance Sports production, directed by Jonathan Levine (_50/50, Long Shot_), also stars David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright.
Tuggle made the Giants roster in 1983 and spent most of the season on special teams. However, he was promoted to starting fullback in week 12 and finished the season with 17 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown, three receptions for 50 yards, and 9 kickoff returns for 156 yards. He was diagnosed with cancer the following year. After staying with the team in 1984, the Giants advised Tuggle not to report to training camp in 1985 because they would be forced to cut him, which would have voided his contract.
Tuggle’s life was previously documented in ESPN’s 30 for 30 short, _The Irrelevant Giant_, [in which Parcells said](https://www.giants.com/news/the-irrelevant-giant-story-of-john-tuggle-mr-irrelevant-1983-nfl-draft), “He was an inspiration of sorts to me because you always wonder if you could do what he did, if you could endure and still have that ‘Let’s have a drink’ (mentality). You wonder. I don’t know the answer whether I could or not. I don’t know, but he inspired me.”
The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25, 2026.
