On Monday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that the team has waived backup cornerback Johnathan Edwards, presumably to open a 53-man roster spot for fellow corner Cam Taylor-Britt, who served his league mandated one game suspension this past weekend:
Originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Colts in the 2025 offseason, Edwards, an athletic 6,’1”, 201 pound cornerback, appeared in 14 games last season, including making 5 starts. He recorded 26 tackles (19 solo) and 3 passes defensed as a rookie during the prior 2025 campaign.
It’s fair to say, he showed some initial promise, albeit in limited action during his debut pro campaign.
While Edwards had struggled during this preseason playing cornerback, [**the thought was with his speed and athleticism**](https://x.com/MathBomb/status/1907829194920177945?s=20), he could continue to stick around for his special teams prowess—although he was a healthy inactive during Sunday’s blowout home opening loss.
That no longer appears to be the case, although it’s possible that Edwards could re-sign to Indianapolis’ practice squad. It’s looking like the Colts elected to keep undrafted rookie Kapena Gushiken, who they snagged off league waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles after final 53-man roster cuts, at Edwards’ continued rostering expense.
Unfortunately, sometimes in the positional room it can be a numbers game and with Taylor-Britt’s imminent return this week, Edwards appears to be the latest victim from a football perspective.
