Cam Skattebo’s Epic Return Marred by Bloody Incident Officials Refused to Call 1
Returning to the gridiron after a serious ankle injury prematurely ended his rookie campaign, running back Cam Skattebo wasted little time making his presence felt against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. His impressive performance played a major role in helping the New York Giants open the season with a 28-20 victory.
However, before the Giants’ win, controversy emerged when television cameras showed Skattebo leaving the field with blood visibly running from his nose.
Cam Skattebo Suffers Bloody Nose After Uncalled Facemask
During Sunday’s contest, a Cowboys defender appeared to grab and twist Skattebo’s facemask during the play. The contact left the Giants running back with a bloody nose, forcing him to briefly leave the field for treatment, though the officials did not throw a penalty flag on the play.

Medical personnel quickly checked on Skattebo along the sideline and determined that he was healthy enough to continue. After receiving treatment for his nose, the running back returned to the field without missing a significant portion of the game.
With Skattebo in the game, the Giants quickly established an early advantage over their NFC East rival, finding the end zone on their opening drive. Skattebo carried the ball 18 times for 81 yards and a touchdown, though he was not targeted once in the passing game.
His physical performance also caught the attention of Philadelphia Eagles legend LeSean McCoy, who used the opportunity to take a pointed shot at Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
“This is what happens when you have an intern for a defensive coordinator,” McCoy said. “They get this player. They get that player… You get this draft pick and all that. It doesn’t matter, though.
“At the end of the day, the number one thing in football, especially on defense, is to stop the run. They got to a point in a game where they did everything they wanted to do, running the ball, and then Skattebo. They were scared of him.”
The performance undoubtedly provided Skattebo with a major confidence boost after the season-ending ankle injury he suffered as a rookie had become so mentally difficult that he briefly considered walking away from football.
“Yeah, definitely. I would say probably a month in,” Skattebo said. “The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really want to do this?” And then, you know, it was seven games. I was like, ‘You know, I got to go back and play.’ ”
However, Skattebo’s impressive Week 1 showing helped put those doubts behind him while giving the Giants running back renewed confidence after his difficult recovery.
As the season moves forward, opposing defenses will undoubtedly study the film from Week 1 and search for ways to limit Skattebo’s physical style and explosive rushing ability.
