Chelsea’s trip to Brentford presents Xabi Alonso with a very different tactical problem to the one his side faced against Hull City.
Keith Andrews’ team are unbeaten in the Premier League this season and remain one of the division’s most physical sides, particularly when matches become direct and contested.
Yet their 2-2 draw at Bournemouth also exposed an area Chelsea should target.
Bournemouth produced 20 shots, 10 efforts on target and 2.18 expected goals, while Brentford managed eight attempts and just 0.50 xG. Sky Sports’ match data shows how heavily the home side were able to pressure the Bees despite failing to turn that superiority into victory.
Chelsea therefore cannot simply worry about surviving Brentford’s strengths.
There is an opportunity to push them backwards.

Bournemouth showed where Brentford can be vulnerable
Brentford emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a point largely thanks to Kevin Schade’s two goals and a superb performance from Caoimhin Kelleher.
The goalkeeper made eight saves, while Bournemouth missed four big chances and also struck the woodwork late on.
Brentford’s official report from the 2-2 draw detailed a second half in which Bournemouth repeatedly progressed through midfield and created opportunities around the penalty area.
That should interest Alonso.
Chelsea possess players capable of exploiting similar spaces.
Cole Palmer wants to receive between midfield and defence, while Morgan Rogers can carry the ball through pressure and Joao Pedro provides movement across the front line.
If Chelsea can establish possession beyond Brentford’s first press, those players should have opportunities.
Chelsea must first survive Brentford’s physical game
Getting there is the challenge.
Brentford’s own pre-match analysis before Bournemouth showed just how unusual their physical numbers are.
The Bees entered the weekend leading the Premier League for both aerial duels won per 90 and interceptions per 90, while also committing more fouls than any other side.
That tells Chelsea exactly what type of contest to expect.
Brentford want second balls, duels and moments when opponents lose their structure.
Those are precisely the situations in which Chelsea have looked vulnerable during Alonso’s opening weeks.
Saturday’s Hull draw was another warning. Alonso admitted afterwards that there are still fundamental areas his team must improve after surrendering control despite taking an early lead. His official post-match assessment made clear Chelsea remain some distance from the controlled side he wants to build.
Moises Caicedo could change the midfield battle
That makes Moises Caicedo’s fitness particularly important.
Chelsea have lacked their strongest defensive midfielder for most of the season after his calf problem returned against Brighton.
Alonso confirmed before Hull that Chelsea were unwilling to risk Caicedo but identified Brentford as the next possible return date in his latest team-news update.
If he returns, Caicedo gives Chelsea something they badly need in this match.
He can compete for second balls, defend transitions and allow the players ahead of him to attack without leaving the back three permanently exposed.
If he does not, Alonso must find that security elsewhere.
Chelsea cannot allow the game to become a sequence of uncontrolled end-to-end attacks.
Alonso should make Brentford defend
The lesson from Bournemouth is that Chelsea should not approach Brentford purely thinking about the Bees’ physical threat.
Make them defend.
Move the ball quickly enough to bypass the first challenge, find Palmer and Rogers between the lines and force Brentford’s midfield to turn towards their own goal.
There could also eventually be another solution from wide areas.
ReadChelsea has already analysed why Marco Palestra could become such an important player in Alonso’s system, with the Italian’s speed and wing-back profile capable of stretching opponents without sacrificing recovery pace.
Palestra may or may not be ready for Brentford.
But the principle applies regardless of personnel.
Chelsea need width, midfield protection and control behind their attack.
Bournemouth showed that Brentford can be made uncomfortable when opponents establish sustained pressure.
The task for Alonso is ensuring Chelsea do enough defensive work first to earn the opportunity to exploit it.
