‘Check With a Bookie Near You’ — Super Bowl Champ Demands Deshaun Watson to Go Under ‘Investigation’ After Massive Week 1 Loss
Week 1 began with an ultimate disappointment for the Cleveland Browns and the organization’s quarterback, Deshaun Watson, who won the QB1 role over Shedeur Sanders.
The franchise suffered a 34–10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson entered the game hoping to rebuild his reputation, but his continued underperformance has left him facing even more criticism.

During the latest episode of “Speakeasy,” McCoy jokingly suggested that Watson’s performance was so poor that it deserved an investigation and said:
“I don’t want to start this, but Deshaun Watson needs to be under investigation for point shaving,” McCoy said on the “Speakeasy” show on Sunday. “We watched Terry Rozier do it in basketball; it’s happening in football. And you think he’s rich? He’s trying to get richer. Check with a bookie near you; Deshaun Watson is on the loose.”
Watson initially tore his Achilles in October 2024 and later reinjured it, forcing him to miss the entire 2025 season. He returned to regular-season action after nearly two years on the sidelines. After the game, the quarterback offered his take on the team’s performance against Jacksonville.
“I think we just got to find a rhythm overall,” Watson said. “Of course everyone’s going to look at the quarterback in the situation. … We got to put points on the board, and that’s what you got to do in this league. Playing the quarterback position, you’re the leader in that role.”
“And we didn’t do that today. We only got 10. We left a lot out there. So obviously I take that responsibility full throttle, and we got to look at the tape and see how we can be better and try to attack Tampa Bay next week to be able to get points on the board to be able to get wins.”

Watson finished the game with 205 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, his touchdown came with only 1:52 remaining, when the outcome had effectively been decided. The Browns had already fallen behind 31–0 early in the third quarter.
McCoy’s comments were quite harsh, but his exaggerated criticism reflected the frustration surrounding Watson and the Browns. There is no evidence that Watson was involved in point shaving or any gambling-related misconduct.
The decision to choose Watson over Shedeur Sanders was already facing criticism, and Watson’s continued underperformance might put additional pressure on head coach Todd Monken.
Monken has maintained that the Week 1 defeat was a collective failure rather than Watson’s responsibility alone. However, patience could quickly disappear if Cleveland’s offense struggles again against Tampa Bay. Sanders remains an available alternative, and calls for the young quarterback will likely grow louder with every poor performance.
Watson must now prove that he can lead productive drives, protect the football and justify the coaching staff’s faith. Otherwise, the Browns could soon be forced to reconsider their quarterback decision.
