As week 1 comes to a close in the National Football League, we got to see an early look on what the AFC East may look like throughout the season. After their first games of the season the standings are as follows:
The Bills were finally able to pick up a win in Houston for the first time since 2006. For Josh Allen it marked his first win in that stadium and he had to earn it that’s for sure. Allen finished the day with 334 passing yards with two touchdowns through the air and another two touchdowns on the ground. It was not a pleasant day for the defense allowing 31 points but shoutout to Deone Walker and Greg Rousseau for clutch sacks on the last drive of the game to clinch the victory.
New York got themselves a road victory as well to start the season in the Robert Saleh Bowl defeating the Tennessee Titans. Who knows what the expectations are for the Jets but after one week there could be some hope. Geno Smith had a productive day at quarterback with no turnovers, and Breece Hall had a 100 yard rushing performance with a touchdown. This is a big season for coach Aaron Glenn because another bad season will likely lead to a new head coach for Gang Green while the team hopefully drafts their quarterback of the future.
The Patriots lost and Bills fans can point to the reason being that they played a “real opponent,” but I would be quick to hold that judgement. Remember a couple seasons ago, Josh Allen threw away a game against the Jets to open the season with silly interceptions giving a victory to Zach Wilson. The same can be said about Drake Maye who was in control for the majority of the game until a string of three fourth-quarter picks. New England showed that they still have a great defense so they can still prove themselves to be contenders again this season. The issue will be that the talk of the offseason was that the team needed a number one receiver. After finally getting one in AJ Brown, he finds himself on IR with a high ankle sprain and will most likely miss six games according to reports.
Lastly with the Dolphins, this marked the beginning of the Malik Willis era at quarterback. Willis showed off the big arm at times but also showed some poor decision making throwing an interception and taking some sacks that could have been avoided. Running back De’Von Achane was held to only 36 rushing yards which is not the recipe for success for Miami. The defense did force a couple of interceptions from Kirk Cousins but could not stop Ashton Jeanty who had 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns as a receiver.
