The Toronto Raptors have officially welcomed the return of Kawhi Leonard to the franchise.
In a press release, the Raptors offered their first statement on the blockbuster trade that took months to finalize with the Los Angeles Clippers.
"We're thrilled to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto. His impact on our organization, our city, and our country is undeniable, and he embodies the competitiveness and championship mindset that we value," Raptors general manager and executive vice-president Bobby Webster said.
"We believe his leadership, experience and talent will help us as we continue building toward our next championship."
Kawhi Leonard officially back in Toronto
The Toronto Raptors acquired Kawhi Leonard from the LA Clippers in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks (2031 and 2033), a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two future second-round picks (2030 and 2033).
Leonard is officially back in Toronto after months of uncertainty surrounding the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers. Now that the Clippers have accepted their punishment, all sides involved have formally moved forward with the trade that was originally agreed upon in July.
The 35-year-old superstar is set to lead the Raptors for the second time. He notably guided Toronto's first NBA title in 2019. Now, he will join a youthful, rising Raps squad led by Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett under Serbian coach Darko Rajakovic.
Leonard averaged a career-high 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game across 65 appearances last NBA season in LA. He is set to sign a max contract extension with the Raptors to stay long-term in Toronto.
