Just seconds after Harrison Butker kicked off what was the Kansas City Chiefs' season opener in Arrowhead Stadium versus the Denver Broncos, Mansoor Delane made his presence felt early. But then, like a flash of lightning, he was gone.
Delane picked off Bo Nix on a deep third-down pass attempt over the middle of the field that set the Chiefs up in favorable field position for Patrick Mahomes to put the Chiefs up 7-0 after a 15-yard scamper. It marked Delane's first career interception on his third career NFL snap. Funnily enough, Delane now has 33% of the interceptions that All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie had in four years as a Chief.
But as Delane lifted himself up off the ground to gain more yards, he was slammed down by Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton on that same left shoulder that had been giving him issues all offseason and forced him to wear a yellow non-contact jersey for the majority of training camp.

After a game-altering interception on the Chiefs' first defensive drive, Delane's shoulder issues persist
With Delane questionable to return throughout the first half, Kristian Fulton was the first CB called up by Steve Spagnuolo to take his place, alongside other starting boundary corner Nohl Williams and do-it-all slot man L'Jarius Sneed.
The Chiefs suffered due to Delane being out, as Pat Bryant accumulated 42 yards on four catches in the first half, and it opened things up for Nix to hit tight end Evan Engram for a 19-yard score. More importantly, though, the bigger question is how long this re-aggravation forces Delane to miss.
It's hard to imagine an injury that has seemingly ended his night as quickly as it began and would have a short timeline to return. In the meantime, Kansas City will have to make do with however long Delane is out. Fulton has looked okay so far, Williams has been excellent in his second season, and Sneed seems reinvigorated after a tough couple of years in Tennessee
The truth of the matter is that the Chiefs need Delane. Especially with a guy like Chamarri Conner who has played so many snaps over the years is also sidelined. It'll be all hands on deck over the coming weeks for this Chiefs' back end to hold up, and more pressure on KC's revamped defensive line to bring the heat.
