The 2026 offseason was looking rather bleak for John Konchar. After being traded by the Utah Jazz to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Konchar found himself being waived to create enough cap space for the Wolves to complete the signing of Jonathan Kuminga. Although this leaves the 30-year-old without a team just a few weeks before training camp, things seem to be turning around for the veteran.
After being waived, John Konchar was widely viewed as one of the more promising free agent wings on the market. By virtue of this status, the 30-year-old was linked to teams like the New York Knicks, who were looking to fill out their roster before the season began.
While this is promising enough, a recent update by NBA insider Marc Stein could present an even more favorable situation for John Konchar, as the veteran wing is reportedly generating interest from three more Eastern Conference teams. Stein wrote:
“John Konchar is one of the top free agents available and has drawn interest, league sources say, from Miami, New York, Orlando, and Toronto.”
Aside from the Knicks, the former Jazz guard is reportedly being pursued by three Eastern contenders, namely the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic, and the Toronto Raptors.
Last season, Konchar averaged 4.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 47.2% from the field and 28.3% from three-point range. While his perimeter shooting was underwhelming, his career average of 34.9% is more reassuring. When you also factor in last season’s averages of 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks per game, the 30-year-old is clearly a high-energy contributor off the bench.
The interest in Konchar seems justified, especially given the value of high-quality two-way wings, particularly those available in the free agent market for a reasonable price. But which team is best suited to the 30-year-old’s skill set?
Which Team Is The Ideal Landing Spot For John Konchar?
Each of the four teams is positioned as an interesting destination for Konchar. While the 30-year-old’s skill set would allow him to seamlessly fit into any system, there are some external factors that could eventually decide where he goes. Stein touched on this in his article, as he noted:
“Yet the Raptors sit just $2.3 million under the first apron with a total of only 13 guaranteed contracts after reacquiring Leonard. The other three teams do have just enough apron flexibility to add one more player; both Florida teams have 14 players on standard contracts, and the Knicks currently have 13.”
As the insider mentioned, the Toronto Raptors have finally received the green light to complete the acquisition of Kawhi Leonard. While this is a phenomenal move for Toronto from a competitive standpoint, it leaves them with very little cap flexibility.
While a minimum deal appears inevitable in virtually every scenario, the Raptors also have just 13 standard players on their roster currently. Thus, with only $2.3 million to offer to fill out two roster spots, Toronto’s best offer to Konchar may not be very promising. In many ways, the Knicks are also likely to face a similar obstacle, though they have $3.2 million at their disposal before they hit the second apron.
Thus, the situation seems to favor the Florida teams, though both have their own constraints.
Though the Miami Heat are currently hard-capped at the first apron with $2.3 million available to them, they can realistically offer John Konchar a minimum deal. However, when noting their roster needs, signing a player like Konchar may not be a priority, especially when a backup point guard seems to be a more pressing requirement.
Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic are in a relatively better position from a cap perspective. Although they are $2.4 million below the second apron, they are not hard-capped, which would allow them to offer more money. However, given their current luxury tax bill, Orlando may be hesitant to sign any more players.
As mentioned earlier, John Konchar’s skill set positions him as the prototypical wing off the bench. As a high-energy piece with defensive upside, the 30-year-old could be a valuable asset on a title-contending squad.
Thus, it seems like the decision will ultimately lie with John Konchar. If money is deemed a priority, engaging in discussions with teams like the Magic or the Knicks may seem more worthwhile. If culture is a bigger factor, a franchise like the Heat may be more appealing. Joining the Raptors currently seems tricky, but they are also poised to be a competitive team following Leonard’s arrival.
