Jalen Duren‘s free agency saga has been one of the key storylines of this year’s offseason and possibly the most turbulent one. Despite a clear interest from the Detroit Pistons to bring the All-Star center back this season, gaps in contract negotiations have resulted in a fairly unfavorable situation for both parties.
Earlier reports indicated that contract negotiations between Detroit and Duren’s representation were moving in a positive direction, suggesting that the center would inevitably return to the Pistons. While it still seems like Jalen Duren will return, the circumstances are quite different.
With the Pistons’ latest offer still falling short of Duren’s expectations, the threat of the qualifying offer seems more legitimate. Thus, when addressing the interest from suitors who could offer the center a max contract next summer, NBA insider Marc J. Spears reported on how the relationship between Jalen Duren and the Pistons may be too damaged to repair.
“Scotty Perry [Kings GM] ain’t playing around,” Spears began. “Scott Perry has a relationship with Jalen Duren dating to when he was trying to get the Knicks to draft him, which they did, but they traded him to the Pistons. Scott Perry also has NFL ties from his father. Duren’s agent is an NFL agent, so he has connections with him. Duren likes Scott Perry a lot. He likes Sacramento a lot. But the Pistons, they’re focused on bringing him back; they have some optimism, but it’s complicated.”
Spears largely highlighted the relationship between Jalen Duren and Kings GM Scott Perry to start things off. With the Kings emerging as one of the most prominent suitors for Duren, Perry’s approach to building a relationship with the Pistons’ star could be the foundation for structuring Duren’s move to Sacramento.
While the Kings’ pursuit is noteworthy, Spears had to acknowledge the Pistons’ ongoing efforts, though he noted they may be in vain, adding:
“I just hear that, with Jalen, it’s not about money right now. He feels disrespected. The Pistons need him back as soon as possible to try to heal this. There’s a black cloud going into camp. Tobias [Harris] is gone. Duren’s not there. They’re not moving forward with the momentum. They’ve got to try and fix it, and I don’t know if they can in time.”
This is a sensitive situation for the Pistons. Although Detroit ended last year’s campaign as the top team in the East, the team looks disjointed following the departure of key pieces like Tobias Harris and Isaiah Stewart. Now, with Duren’s negotiations raising more concerns, there is bound to be internal turmoil.
As mentioned earlier, the ongoing stalemate between Jalen Duren and Detroit has not benefited either party. Now, with Duren feeling disrespected by the Pistons’ reservations about meeting his contract demands, earlier reports about the two sides nearing an agreement seem unreasonable.
Detroit’s inclination to retain Jalen Duren is understandable, especially when considering he averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game and earned an All-NBA (third team) selection last season. However, the current scenario may not be conducive to his return.
Given how his return could affect team chemistry and performance, the Pistons should be wary of continuing negotiations. In this regard, allowing the big man to accept the qualifying offer or simply signing-and-trading him to the Kings to bring back some assets may have more upside than retaining him.
