With the window closed, Chelsea fans will have been largely happy with the work done throughout the summer. But they need another midfielder, and supporters want a Premier League star re-signed.

Failure to bring in another midfielder after selling Enzo Fernandez has left Xabi Alonso’s side light in the middle of the park, with Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson still out – Henderson is back in training.

Chelsea don’t need a player like Fernandez; they need a defensive midfielder who can partner Caicedo and allow Reece James to play at right-back. Romeo Lavia’s form has dipped in the last couple of games.

Lamine Camara or Manu Kone would have been ideal signings. Defensive-minded players who are superb in transition and can create from deep. On Monday night however, Leeds beat Newcastle at Elland Road.

Chelsea fans want Ethan Ampadu after Monday masterclass

Back in 2023, BlueCo cashed in on Wales star Ampadu. The Cobham academy graduate had just spent two years in Serie A on loan at Spezia and Venezia, suffering relegation twice. Leeds paid just £7m.

Over the last three seasons, Ampadu has found his home. He has become club captain and a stalwart in Daniel Farke’s side. On Monday, he was superb as Leeds cruised past Newcastle to secure a 4-1 win.

Onlooking Chelsea fans have urged BlueCo to re-sign the player they sold for a bargain £7m, just three years later. Having signed a new deal in the summer, Ampadu is likely to cost a whole lot more than that.

Ampadu was superb for Leeds, winning every tackle and covering every blade of grass. One Chelsea fan agreed with the post above, replying: “Agree with that big time. Would be an amazing signing.”

“Yes he is good, he loves us too”, was the reaction from another Chelsea supporter in response to the above post. One fan also commented: “This came to my mind today; he’s been good at Leeds.”

Did Chelsea include a clause in the deal to sell Ethan Ampadu?

The deal to sell Ampadu to Leeds cost an initial £7m, plus £3m more in add-ons. Those add-ons are likely to have been met given Ampadu’s success at Elland Road, promotion, and his Wales form since leaving.

Chelsea didn’t include a buyback clause in the deal, with that type of clause largely unused in English football. It is something more common over in Spain, but Chelsea did include a sell-on fee for Ampadu.

If Chelsea did go in for Ampadu, it means they would have to forget about a potential windfall of cash for the Wales star. But it could save Chelsea a bit of cash on the fee to sign Ampadu if they made a move.
