Jordan Henderson could finally make his competitive Chelsea debut against former club Brentford on Friday as Xabi Alonso weighs up his midfield options.
The 36-year-old has yet to feature since joining Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Brentford.
Henderson suffered a broken wrist while representing England at the World Cup and subsequently underwent surgery, delaying the start of his Chelsea career.
He has since returned to first-team training and Alonso has confirmed the midfielder is now in the final stage of his recovery.
Speaking about Henderson earlier this month, Alonso said the veteran had been training well despite the frustration of an arm injury keeping him sidelined for so long. The latest Chelsea injury update lists Friday’s trip to Brentford as a possible return date.

Henderson could solve Chelsea midfield problem
His availability would come at a useful time.
Chelsea remain without certainty over Moises Caicedo, who has missed the last three matches after aggravating a calf problem.
Alonso has not ruled Caicedo out of Brentford, but has made clear Chelsea will not risk another premature return.
That leaves Henderson as a potentially important option alongside Romeo Lavia or Reece James as Alonso searches for more control in midfield.
Chelsea’s defensive balance has already been questioned after another chaotic 2-2 draw against Hull City, while ReadChelsea has analysed both Marco Palestra’s potential tactical impact and how Alonso can target Brentford’s weaknesses.
Friday would therefore be more than just Henderson’s Chelsea debut.
It could also come against the club he left only weeks ago.
