Haaland: I'm proud to have broken the Premier League derby goalscoring record
Erling Haaland says becoming all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League era of the Manchester derby is a moment he is especially proud of.
Haaland’s crucial 60th minute strike in Sunday’s 199th showdown between the Blue and Red halves of Manchester not only secured a huge 1-0 victory for Enzo Maresca’s 10-man side.
In the process, it also meant the 26-year-old became the top scorer of Manchester derby goals in the Premier League era.
Haaland’s latest Old Trafford winner took his overall league derby tally to nine from eight games – lifting him above Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney who both accrued eight across their stellar careers.
And for the City talisman it was an extra special moment to secure his unique place in the annals of one of world football’s most iconic fixtures.
“I knew about this record before, I read about it, so it had ended up in my head,” Haaland revealed.
“I’m super proud of that. This is something that makes me really, really happy because we all know how special this game is.

“Ever since I came to Manchester, they gave me a little bit, I give them a little bit.
“But, when it comes to the thing, it’s about having some banter and enjoying the love of the game and fighting for your team.
“I think this game, since I got my debut at the Etihad against Manchester United, this game has always been special.”
The goal that took him to the record-breaking derby summit was another classic example of Haaland’s natural predatory prowess and extraordinary awareness of goal.
In a fraction of second from an awkward initial position, Haaland rifled home a fabulous instinctive finish that – albeit after a lengthy three-minute VAR delay – secured another famous derby victory.
“It’s just pure instinct, of what I feel is the right thing to do,” the Norwegian added.

“And, in the end, there’s no solution to this or that. How to finish, how to do this, how to do that.
“It’s just about trying to get the ball in the back of the net and shooting good enough so the keeper cannot save it.
“So that’s just what I’m trying to think of.”
Sunday’s latest triumph made it four league wins out of four for City who have enjoyed a tremendous start to life under manager Enzo Maresca.
And the great news for the Blues is that despite all his record-breaking exploits to date across his four years at the Etihad to date, Haaland believes he can still get better!
Asked about his own personal goals for the season, Haaland said: “Of course, I have them but for me it’s about developing still.
“I’m still 26, I can still develop parts of my game.
“I have to be the decisive player so it’s about delivering what I can do for Manchester City, that’s my main goal and to take it game by game.
“It’s a long season, just try to enjoy it.”
